• Can urban exploration apply to forests/beaches etc?

Simple.. Im having an idiotic conversation with a friend that believes that urban exploration doesn't neccarily have to be in the city. I believe that URBAN basically means CITY or a place where there is streets, people, cars, stores etc.
If there's an abandonment or odd infrastructure or whatever somewhere in a rural area, it's still considered "urban exploration".
They're all broadly defined, but I would agree with you, because I would think of being in the forest would be just normal exploring.
Indeed, but wouldn't it be stupid to call it "urban exploration" if you're in the woods and you happen to find an abandoned building? I'd say you're just exploring. If you're in the city and checking out tunnels and what not, i'd call that urban.
"Exploration " is cool too. Why are you argueing? Sounds like your friend is afraid that the word "exploration" is not as hip and cool as "urban exploration".
The line is a bit fuzzy but I'd agree with you, however since many such places are close to an urban area (parks and whatnot) they can't really be considered to be their own category (in my opinion) simply because they're usually put there/left there as an accessory to an urban environment, much as a building would be. But wooded areas that are miles outside of town, certainly.
Because I'm the kind of guy that has to be right in every debate. Anyway, the problem was that I was thinking of a scenario where me and him would explore some forest. In that forest it just so happens that we find an abandoned building. Now, he sees this as "urban exploring", while i find urban exploring exploring in an urban area (city). What laval said that any building would be urban exploring, but once outside, it would be normal exploring, no? Looks like friend agrees:
ur⋅ban   /ˈɜrbən/ [ur-buhn] –adjective 1. of, pertaining to, or designating a city or town. 2. living in a city. 3. characteristic of or accustomed to cities; citified: He is an urban type. Your friend is retarded indeed. "Urban Exploring" as a term relates to being within an Urban area. Once you leave an urban area, it becomes hiking. "Nature Exploring" if you like. Punch him in the dick.
There are coastal cities. So...
urban does not equal woods
There are coastal cities. So...
Right, but let's just imagine we're in the middle of no where and we stumble upon some abandoned building. Once we go inside, we're "urban exploring", once we're outside, we're just hiking (or "natural exploring)" Sounds silly, no?
urban does not equal woods
Urban is in the city. Thus, it cant be in the woods..

Maybe urban exploration is defined as exploring buildings? It would seem odd saying it while referring to the forest but if you explored like a huge coal mine or something, it would be urban exploration I think.

Because to me, urban bascially means city. Now some people define that buildings = urban, but being in the forest, it wouldn't be that urban, would it?
There could be a urban area which is surrounded by a forest. Seriously i wouldn't argue with your friend over something so silly, it would be stupid to fall out with him/her because of this.
Well regardless it's a stupid argument and you could better spend your time solving AIDS or something
i hate it when childish 13 year old arguments make their way to Facepunch because the silly 13 yos can't decide for themselves how to settle it the big boys at facepunch really can't be bothered with such retarded conflicts, go to your daddy or some shit, not us. Then maybe FacePunch would be crap free, like it was during the long-gone golden years before you idiots.
i think a dictionary could solve this, personally; if not, it wouldn't hurt to agree to disagree over something so trivial

Rural exploration is what you want.
You have a very dumb friend.
He could be thinking of a neighborhood, while you are thinking of a city. Unless he actually specified forests and stuff, in which case he's just dumb.
Exploring the woods is called hiking.
He could be thinking of a neighborhood, while you are thinking of a city.
Irrelevant. URBAN exploration.
Urban comes from the Latin "Urps" which means city. Your friend is stupid.
Right, but let's just imagine we're in the middle of no where and we stumble upon some abandoned building. An urban area would be a city or village, with a decent amount of buildings. You're not necessarily "urban exploring" just because you're indoors. However, if it's a large industrial building or facility, that often can fall into the category. "An urban area is an area with an increased density of human-created structures in comparison to the areas surrounding it."
Could have just used yahoo answers. But anyways I believe urban means cities, buildings, towns, etc. Not a fucking beach.
Indeed, but wouldn't it be stupid to call it "urban exploration" if you're in the woods and you happen to find an abandoned building? I'd say you're just exploring.
