A lawyer for Army Pvt. Bradley Manning, said in a blog post on Thursday the soldier is doing well as he goes through processing at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth.
David Coombs wrote that he spoke on Wednesday with Manning while he goes through the three-to-four-week period known as indoctrination at the Kansas prison. Coombs, who lives in Rhode Island, also said he plans to travel there in the coming weeks to meet with medical staff and the leadership in the quest to allow Manning to receive hormone therapy and other treatment for his gender dysphoria -- the sense of being a woman trapped in a man's body.
I have a feeling that tricare doesn't provide/cover hormone therapy so I feel he's gonna be pretty shit out of luck.
He's at Fort Leavenworth now? My dad goes to the VA hospital there for his appointments. Also, from what little i know about military prisons, it's like bootcamp every day, so i take it that the lawyer saying that he's "doing well" as a way of saying "well, at least he hasn't hanged himself with his blanket yet".

Nah it's only like boot camp when you first get there. They'll treat you differently depending how compliant you are. If you're not compliant expect to have multiple staff sergeants screaming their lungs out at you until you conform. There are rewards for well behaved prisoners (using the library, rec center, family talks, etc.). There are also punishments for misbehaving (not having access to any of the former). All in all military prison might sound horrifying but it will mostly be your attitude that will make the difference during your incarceration. It can either suck terribly or just suck. (I go to the brig with my doctor to do medical/mental health visits often. They gave us the grand tour).
Guys. Her name is Chelsea, and she is doing well with the boys.
Hopefully gender dysphoria will be taken more seriously, and next time someone is shown to have these kinds of issues the military will think twice before deeming their condition stable enough to have access to high security files.
Seems fairly sensible that he'd be doing fine, since it's not like it's Gitmo or a convicted terrorist.

what does gender dysphoria have to do with being stable enough to have access to high security files
what does gender dysphoria have to do with being stable enough to have access to high security files
Manning's lawyers used his gender dysphoria as part of the defence, explaining that it caused him distress while having to live up to the macho culture of the military.
I certainly disagree with the idea that people with the condition should be denied a job in intelligence work simply on that basis, but that's what Manning's dysphoria has to do with this whole issue as far as I know.

It's the exact same brand of sarcasm you use, c'mon.

ugh really? i find that in bad taste.

thisispain's sarcasm usually doesn't call GID an unstable condition
the brand might be the same but it's actually a chinese knockoff

are you 12

He was pretty much an emotional wreck at the time due to the clash between his self-identity and the culture of the military, not to mention the utter lack of support he was receiving. People in emotional turmoil don't always make the best decisions. Nobody's implying that gender dysphoria makes people traitors or whatever, just that he was under a ton of stress and wasn't of sound mind (again, not strictly because of the gender dysphoria, but in trying to deal with it).
are you 12
That's classified.

I don't understand why this is rated dumb, it is true that she is transgender.

really not what this thread is about, just a post to stir up shit
really not what this thread is about, just a post to stir up shit
Manning specifically asked the media and those discussing her to use feminine pronouns. The OP's article and the subsequent discussion here is failing to practice that.
You'd think you could award her a little bit of decency and respect that.
Out of curiosity, what exactly happens during this 'indoctrination' period?
Can we not have a single article about Manning without it devolving into a transgender shitstorm?

I thought it was the "doing well with the boys" line.
