I have all of my music on my desktop, but I frequently leave my house and am on my laptop which does not have any of my music. I've been using the Windows 7 feature called homegroup around my house, but how would I do something similar to the homegroup sharing across the internet? Help would be greatly appreciated
Dropbox

Can dropbox hold 25GB of music for free? I'm not looking to automatically sync my music into the cloud, I'm looking to stream my music off of my machine at home onto my laptop
Opera browser can do that.
If you are moving between places with constant internet access, then why not look the music up on you-tube?

My music is in a centralized place, easy to find, and is high quality.

doing some research I've found this - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Stream-your-media-over-the-Internet-using-Windows-Media-Player
although if anybody has any better ideas I would like to hear them
forwarded ports + dyndns = your shit remotely
i have my ports forwarded to a NAS I have so I can access my stuff anywhere

Alright, how would I go about doing this?
google, it's really not hard

Actually, yes it is. For the last 15 minutes I've been googling and trying to find out how to set up a DNS or whatever the fuck it is and nothing relevant is coming up. Can you be more specific as to what it is called?
Pogoplug is a pretty good, just use an external with it. Cost is an issue potentially, but it works great. Streams media to most devices.

dyndns lets you register a DNS address and append it to your home router. aka shitty free url you can use to point to your router.
What you are doing on your router is forwarding your ports to wherever your stuff is stored.
the method of accessing and storing whatever you need remotely is up to you, there are multitudes of ways to do it

for example if you want to remotely access your PC using the remote desktop protocol, you would forward port 3389 to your PC's static IP address
this stuff really isn't complicated

yes it is, otherwise I wouldn't be having much trouble with it
In the end I'm just using Hamachi as I can do Homegroup now, and it is way simpler than what you are suggesting

No it isn't, unless you and google are Fiends to each other
Opera Unite
Basically just runs a simple webserver in the browser
I can't believe that no one has suggested the obvious answer.
Windows Media Player -> Allow Internet access to home media
It ties in with homegroup and lets you remotely access your media over the internet.
