• "Patriot Legal Expense Fund" to help Trump campaign staff pay legal bills in Russia investigation
Lawyers are laying the groundwork for a new legal defense fund to aid those who have at one point served candidate and now President Donald Trump and who have been pulled into the ongoing Russia probe. The fund, called the "Patriot Legal Expense Fund," is being looked to as a way to provide financial support for any legal bills incurred by any individual who "was an employee, consultant, fundraised or volunteer" on behalf of President Trump’s campaign, according to a document labeled “draft” that was posted on the Office of Government Ethics website. The document, written by lawyers from Wiley Rein LLP, is dated Jan. 29, 2018, but it is unclear who started the fund or how much in assets the funds currently hold. However, separately the Trump campaign which spent $1.1 million on legal fees last quarter included a $10,000 payment to the same law firm for “legal consulting,” according to FEC filings. A source with knowledge says the campaign did hire the law firm to start the fund, but that the campaign will have no role in the day to day management or the funding of the project.

The document posted on the Office of Government Ethics website says members of the Trump administration and transition team can also benefit from the fund with some exceptions. It explicitly says President Trump and anyone in his immediate family cannot benefit from the fund . FEC records from 2017 have shown legal fees for some members of the first family have previously been paid by the Trump campaign committee. The document says the fund will compensate those who incur legal expenses from the investigation being led by various Congressional Committees and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian meddling during the 2016 Presidential Elections.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/legal-fund-development-trump-administration-campaign-staff-pay/story?id=52795689 Don't worry, Trump's appointment to the Office of Government Ethics says this is perfectly ethical. Gotta protect those Patriots™.
Between this and the football team, I would not be surprised if 'patriot' soon meant 'lying cheater'.
If this is the cost of being a patriot then fuck being patriotic
What a world we live in when potential traitors end up being defended as "patriots".
"I'll pay the legal fees" just became "Please help me pay the lawyers who are trying to cover up my treason"
I hope everyone involved in aiding Trump and his henchmen goes 100% broke trying to defend themselves, and promptly serves life in prison. That's how you fucking Drain the Swamp™.
Trump can't afford lawyers, he's too poor I wouldn't want a President as poor as Trump. Can he even afford a mere private jet? What a laugh.

I'm sure there's gonna be big check donors coming out of the woodwork to spend money on something that doesn't directly benefit them
I'm sure there's gonna be big check donors coming out of the woodwork to spend money on something that doesn't directly benefit them
There will be. The GOP's corporate donors want to bury this treason because it will devastate the Republican party's political capital for a generation if a wave of indictments were to sweep through Trump's campaign staff and family, given how aggressively the GOP have been working to obstruct the investigation. They know it's too late to be actual patriots, so now they're putting everything they have on the cover-up and obstruction.
What a world we live in when potential traitors end up being defended as "patriots".
I for one blame the "Patriot Act", although it too is probably just a symptom of the fervent nationalism brought by the Cold War. Some people are simultaneously so braindead about politics and yet so passionate about their own politics that they blindly support shit just because it has the "patriotic" branding. You could have a bill called the "Patriotic Patriot's Freedom Patrionism Act", which calls for stomping puppies to death in the name of protecting the country(tm), and people would still support it.

The actions committed by the GOP and the Trump Administration on America show a clear disregard for the wellbeing of this country, this country's people, and this country's unity. The current regime is literally shitposting on Twitter and potentially using bots to push their propaganda, as well as intentionally provoking other parties with attached riders to "agreed upon" legislation and intentional government shutdowns. Nobody who blindly follows this regime's propaganda, brainwashing, and vitriol can even begin to claim to be a patriot. It's a clear contradiction. If you agree with the current administration's tactics and deceit, you are not a patriot. This is clear. People trying their best to restore order and reverse damages done by the regime? People protesting in the streets? People calling for change, impeachment, investigations? These are the true patriots of America. These are the people doing what they can - and following The Constitution - to bring about peace and prosperity. Using "Patriot" in titles of organizations and legislation in order to trick people into thinking it's a good thing? Not very patriotic.

Calling those during the Revolution traitors is more of a technicality than anything. Regardless if the US was technically part of the UK at the time, it was still basically just a vassal nation. Those responsible for the Revolution were loyal to that vassal state.
