• Dead External Drive?

Hey guys, I don't usually need technical support but I'm at a loss here I have a Iomega 1TB External HDD, the model is LDHD-UP and today it stopped working, I can't access the disk. Not only that, but as long as the disk is connected to my PC via USB it hangs a lot of applications, for example if I try to run the disk management utility it won't load until I disconnect the disk, if I try to run Steam or games they won't start until the disk is disconnected as well. I tried running a few disk repair tools and they all hang until I either pull the USB cable out or turn off the external hard drive. I tried switching the USB cable to no avail, the HDD never suffered any physical damage, it's about 3 years old most of which it has been turned off as I only turn it on when I'm using my laptop at home, when I turn on the power I can hear it booting up but then it makes no other noises, no read/write noises and no clicks or other sounds that indicate it has been damaged in any way. I'm also wondering if it might be the power adapter, I'll have it tested tomorrow, is there anything else I can try other than taking it to some place where they check what's wrong with this kind of stuff? I'd prefer not having to format it if that is even possible anymore as I have some important data in there, but I'm willing to try anything if it comes to that. Thanks in advance. EDIT: Event Viewer pops this warning: "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR31 during a paging operation."
The Iomega thing is just a case with a regular IDE/SATA drive inside it. Just take the thing apart and put the drive in your computer to see if it works.
I don't have a PC, just a laptop and my laptop is kind of weird when it comes to changing HDD, have to take the whole thing apart because there's no opening under it, I'll take it to a friend tomorrow and we'll test it, thanks.
