China zoo under fire for disguising dog as lion

I'm guessing half the people who went there probably never saw a real lion before anyway and didn't know any better.

Either that or kept the dog at a distance from the viewers. I can see it being mistaken easily if it were kept a few yards away and told everyone it was a lion.
