everyone who's saying "yeah we want this to appeal to NEW GAMERS and we want to MODERNIZE the game for NEW FANS" deserves to be nuked

it makes it easy enough to find out which games you should lose all hope in so you're not disappointed when it comes out, though
But that complexity is what made Chaos Theory amazing.
No series has fallen quite as far as Splinter Cell.
Deus Ex was pretty complex, and was on PS2.
It actually was quite complex to be completely stealthy, especially in Conviction.
I fucking hate this mentality. Since when is complexity a bad thing? The more complex a game is, the deeper, more engaging, and more immersive the experience is.
that playthrough looked so boring, and the tension of the human shield is utterly lost when the friend goes "that's not gonna help",the fuck? Just trying to make as many sales as possible; guys time to close the book on Splinter Cell, don't know about you but the series is finished. Hopefully the glory of Chaos Theory will glimmer and live again in other games/series. I'm going to take a look at the new Thief and see if maybe there's a glimmer there. Or wait for someone like Jonathan Blow to make a stealth game, he's mentioned that he might in the past.
it's now about making a buck rather than making a quality game.
Admit it: Splinter Cell wouldn't sell too well if it weren't modernized. Sure, It'd probably be a fantastic game, but not from a sales standpoint.
Which is a shame.
I agree with redBadger 100%.
Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, and Ghost Recon all use to be quality games. They just won't sell well now. Man I use to live off tactical shooters back in the day...

I'm not sure. The first 3, which made the game as big as it is, sold really well and it actually started falling when they "modernized" it.
Developers are so afraid of making challenging games these days. Most of them at least.

It wouldn't sell too well if they just release Chaos Theory again with updated visuals. But; If they did interesting things with the tension of being close yet invisible, things like multiple layers of sound.. breathing, co-op scenarios(remember coop ?), gadgets other than the same old sticky shock, a state of the art light engine. The stealth genre hasn't seen innovation in the longest time.
RIP SC
I don't know if it was just me, but I found Chaos Theory simple enough to understand. You had a light/dark bar, a sound bar, and you used the left trigger for nonlethal and the right for lethal. That's basically all you needed to know offhand. While I haven't been following Blacklist, it's a shame that they've decided to make the game a bit louder and "simpler" in this case. I hate most of all that they continue to drag Sam Fisher along, when they've proven they can create new and somewhat interesting characters in the coop story of Conviction. Sam is old and quite honestly probably over retirement. He deserves some rest.
got to love the mentality of "everyone is a fucking idiot and mass appeal is the only way to make a profit"
blacklist is already shaping up to represent everything abhorrent about the AAA games industry
Wasn't Splinter Cell a system seller for the Original Xbox though, with all its complexities intact?

"We can't have Michael Ironside because we'd rather just rent a motion capture studio than hiring facial animators"

Yeah. So was Morrowind, so I don't get how dumbing down is beneficial in any way.
Splinter Cell was never even particularly complex. Stick in shadows, walk past guards when they have your back turned, shoot a dude, do the same thing but only in reverse. You had a small inventory of items but it was mostly "Stuff that knocks people out or kills them".

Having multiple approach ways and multiple shadows to hide in is already too much for the contemporary triple A game I guess?
Thanks for killing SC (more)! Ever since Double Agent the series has been in a downward spiral.

it was complex to be stealthy in conviction because the game literally forced you to kill people.
it is completely impossible to beat that game without killing a single person.

That's the kicker though, it's not the most complex game in the world and they still found a way to dumb it down to oblivion.
i hate jade raymond.
If new players are intimidated by a game then it's not because of its complexity, but rather the failure of the developer to create a steady learning curve.
I don't even understand, it's not like Splinter Cell is a really complex game at all. You have some gadgets and alternative ways to complete your objective. There is not really that much thinking or planning to be made.
This is really dumb.
There hasn't been a true, good Splinter Cell game in this whole console gen. Think about that for a second. It has been dead for a good 8 years. Fuck you Ubisoft.
Or maybe it's 2 soon to say it won't come back. Maybe they'll pull off an XCOM and simplify it without making it retarded for a "modern audience".
Nah who am I kidding? Some day Ubisoft will go bankrupt and the rights will be lost to someone who doesn't care for SC, making it impossible to get the games legally anywhere. There'll be some bootlegs, but they won't be optimized for Windows 14 quantum hardware, making SC become all but lost to dumb corporate decisions. We'll remember it as "that stealth series with 3 amazing games and a bunch of other mediocre-to-terrible sequels".
