Gil Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011) was an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1970s and early 1980s work as a spoken word performer and his collaborative soul works with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron's recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". His poetic style has been influential upon every generation of hip hop since his popularity began. In addition to being widely considered an influence in today's music, Scott-Heron remained active until his death, and in 2010 released his first new album in 16 years, entitled I'm New Here. R.I.P. True modern funky poet.
I wasn't ready for him to go. :saddowns: He had many stories to tell that were untold... and now I do hope that he isn't understated any longer. For starters, Hall of Fame.
Few artists can be said to have been active until death these days. RIP Gil.
I wanted to make this thread as soon as I read it on the news when I woke up. Legendary poet and musician. Much love.
Have they released how he died yet? Half way through I'm New Here, it is amazing so far.
And let us not forget:
I can't believe he's actually dead. What an amazing man.
I can't believe he's actually dead. What an amazing man.
First time in ages I was really disheartened by a musician's death. :smith:
Apparently there's a thing on tonight on radio 1.
Apparently there's a thing on tonight on radio 1.
Should be a program dedicated to this man. Not a crummy radio show.
apparently it's on a 2am as well :(
apparently it's on a 2am as well :(
fuck 'em.
Radio One is terrible at the moment, he wasn't even mentioned on the day at all. They still play old songs like Me No Speak Americano, saying "What a great song!" after, but if they play something from the same time that is by a rock band, they'll talk about how it's such and old song. Makes no sense.
And here is an example of what durgs do to a person :/
And here is an example of what durgs do to a person :/
It's depressing, but at least he didn't go down without trying to fight it.
