I'm going here because I have tried everywhere else. I've replaced most of the parts to my old dell dimension 5000 (kept the old hard disk) see here for the new ones. It's running windows xp home sp2. Right now, I can't really do much. Every time I try to run safe mode, it will tell me that windows setup cannot run in safemode an restarts. This only started happening after I tried to run windows setup inside safemode and restarted the computer. I've tried the bootcfg /add twice, each time to no avail (see google). The reason I need to run windows set up is because windows bluescreens while loading. I have no idea why this is happening. And now I can't fix it. What to do? I'm typing off my itouch so sorry for the poor formatting.
What error does the bluescreen say exactly?
STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xB7B27750, 0xB84DF42C, 0xB84DF128).
Apparently this can be caused by hardware or driver incompatibility. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330182 You mentioned you replaced most of the parts in your old Dell, did this start happening after you put the new parts in? Do you have a Windows CD so you can try a repair?

Repair install has been run twice, but hasn't fixed the blue screen. [editline]01:09PM[/editline] Guys, I need this done before the end of the day. Anyone know?!
If you cant boot into regular windows or safe mode. And the repair doesn't work then you need to re-install windows.
If you cant boot into regular windows or safe mode. I was hoping to not have to override my previous windows so I can still get the files. Bear in mind I CANNOT ACCESS ANY GUI. SAFEMODE IS FUCKED.
I think setup will save your stuff in C:\Windows.old but I can't be sure of that.

Your HDD may be damaged.
Your HDD may be damaged.
It's not damaged. It was working fine before the update.
Right, well... Will it delete all of the files on the computer?
What it did for me is this. *Informed me that there was a previous Windows installation on my hard drive and whether or not you want it backed up. *After choosing yes, it backed up everything on the hard drive and placed it in some temporary folder while reformatting the hard drive. *After Windows was reinstalled, it informed me that my old files were now located in C:\Windows.old It deletes everything, but only after backing it up. Like I said, though, I haven't done this in a while, so don't hold me to it. If you want and are able to do so, you could get a LiveCD linux distro and back up your stuff from there.
doesn't dell like to put limitations on what people can upgrade on their prebuilt systems? I have no experience with this but I've heard that dell motherboards don't play nice with non-dell hardware. If you also upgraded the motherboard (as you seem to imply): are you still using the windows installation CDs that came with your dell? they may have put some restrictions on that as well. if that's the case, I'd say find another windows xp (or 7, depending on your hardware) CD and just reinstall using the non-OEM key provided by dell (it's usually on the case) and if it won't take that then you might have to simply buy a new copy of windows =X as for backup solutions, I would suggest maybe taking your hard drive and plugging it into a friend's computer (you can either install it directly or buy an enclosure), then from there, depending on the size of the drive, you can either partition it with all your files on one partition and your future OS on another, or simply back everything up onto an external HDD.
I got Puppy Linux, but I don't know how to use it to back up anything. Never used linux before :frown: Please help! It's the only place I can back this up <____> [editline]04:45PM[/editline] ANYone know?!
