Did this a while ago - One of my fave songs. Use this link for quality: http://tezzanator.net/Band/Around%20the%20world-mixed.mp3 Recorded as an experiment to determine the weaknesses in my recording rig (I NEED MORE TOM MICS!) I Need critique ("It's crap" doesn't count): I'm still learning how to mix and master decently so any suggestions would be welcome!! - This is only my 2nd mix I've ever done (I am NOT using Auto-mastering tools like Izotope Ozone Until I understand how and why it does what it does) Who-What: Me - Bass Guitar (Musicman Stingray) My brother - Drums (Tama Swingstar) James - Guitar (Fender Telecaster) Richie - Vox Some reservations: I Didn't have enough mics to close mic the kit so it lacks some balls. Vocals Seriously need re tracking with a condenser in a quiet room, Getting his voice to cut the mix without horrible spill, ew. For those who care, Recording stuff: The track was recorded live In a tiny room straight to a multi-track interface - 8 tracks total Using Ardour on Linux with soundcraft Preamps. Vocals - Sennheiser e815 Guitar - El Cheapo Chinese Mic (I should of rolled the High end off a bit more) Bass - D.I Kick - SM57 (There's a reason I used this here, The other mics couldn't take the SPL without sounding BAD) Overheads - Behringer C2 Pencil condensers
I'm no expert on mixing, but the guitar sounds a little thin or trebley. The bass sounds perfect, nice job. The mastering on that album was pretty terrible anyways haha.
I totally thought you were talking about an Around the World by daft punk cover
Me too.
The bass playing sounds great, very much like the original, good job on that. The guitar, as previously stated, is a little thin and the drums need to come forward in the mix a bit.
I think you were perfect, really. Bass was brilliant, but your singer...although good at memorising the lyrics he has a bit of an annoying tone. [editline]08:08AM[/editline] His voice is good at the chorus, though.
The guitar is very weak(in terms of sound), instead of using a very cheap mic like that, use a line in through the amp to the computer, even tough the sound card may not be the best, I can guarantee you will probably get better results. The rest is quite nice, good job.
Thanks for the comments. It think I might get me a Kick mic so that I can put the SM57 On the guitar, Those cheap mics do tend to "Fizzle". Atleast none of you said it was unlistenable :v:
I really like his voice. Everywhere. Especially during the chorus, but even during the phrases his voice is fucking awesome. Does he have his own band? If not, he should form one. His vocals are great. Personally I think the mix sounds just fine. I like the guitar tone as it is.
He does his own solo Stuff but he hasn't recorded any yet. Thanks!
stick some t-racks on that shit oh wait, you aren't using mastering tools, nevermind
Plus it's $400... $400 to do something I could do by hand with practice...
Plus it's $400... $400 to do something I could do by hand with practice...
You guys planning on recording any other songs in your fledgling studio? I wouldn't mind hearing some other covers by you guys. :buddy:
at first i thought it was going to be technoshit. but is this a red hot chili peppers song? if so the singers pretty good.
Yeah It's a chili peppers song. We can also do some kings of leon, so might record some of that soon!
Yeah It's a chili peppers song. We can also do some kings of leon, so might record some of that soon!
Why not? Maybe you can try recording an original song, too? :buddy:
Why not? Maybe you can try recording an original song, too? :buddy:
We actually do have a "Demo" of the instrumental side of one of our songs, Sans timing and proper drums (Literally just an Idea noting), Got it down on paper (Sheet music) :v: Bass Is double tracked with two tones (Experiment) https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/286964/pro1-mix2.mp3 We're working on structuring the lyrics, There's a really nice 3 way guitar harmony about 3/4 in.. The end has a string section and a reverberated piano.
So the bass is D.I. with minimal to no eq or compression added? If so, I only want a stringray a million times more. p.s. I liked the playing of the drums but overall the mix lacked some serious balls
There's a slight mid boost to help it be heard in the mix (It's the same when I play live - Boost mids helps a ton!) but no compression :)
