Im stuck between these two options for my Alienware m17x. I don't know which one to choose or which one is better in the long run. Any input would help The other specs that im set on ordering it with- -Intel Core i7 720QM -ATI Mobility Radeon 5870 or dual ATI Mobility Radeon 4870 -17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 RGB LED (1200p) -4GB of RAM (can impoove later) -250 GB HDD
Get a 5870. But why are you getting a gaming laptop?
Alienware m17x
no [editline]03:52AM[/editline] just no
Really, you shouldn't get a laptop for gaming. It'll be expensive as hell. Build a desktop.
Dual 4870 is a bit faster but I would still go for the 5870. (dx 11 and future support) Then again I would never EVER get a gaming laptop since they all suck and always underperform. Even I would get a gaming laptot I would never buy an alienware overpriced POS. (unless its that crysis running netbook)

If you absolutely needed to, get one from Newegg.
I need a laptop because this will also be for work. My friend has a m15x and it'll run fallout 3/ gta4 on highest settings with no lag. So I'm not worried about that. Alienware is not really a pos. The whole thing is metal, most laptops I see out there are some plastic crap. Yea I could get a ASus for $1500 with nearly the same specs but the whole thing is plastic.

It would still underperform for the price you payed tough. 4870Mobile <<<< 4870 normal. One normal 4870 uses as much power as your whole laptop. Just go figuer out the performance difference. And you should note that 30% of the price you pay is just for the Alienware logo.
get a netbook for work and a desktop for gaming
You also might want to look at MSI laptops.
@taipan I've seen one msi at microcenter that was a direct knockoff of the MacBook air. That's cool and all but the thing looked so cheap that if I toutched it, it would break. That's the only msi I've ever seen, I don't know about the other ones, I'll give them a look. And yes I know a desktop is so much more powerfull then this. And yes I know I am paying for the alien but I'm not that worried about that. Thanks for the input though. @yumyyumybubblegum. I have thought about that but I have realized I can't stand a 10" screen EDIT: @taipan the msi's look pretty good but I'm still set on a alienware because im stupid :D @EBS-Gamer great deals on newegg that almost made me change my mind. -now comes down to the decision -ATI Mobility Radeon 5870 with a core i7 820QM or -dual ATI Mobility Radeon 4870 in CrossfireX with a core i7 720QM
I'd say 5870 and 820. More cpu, higher DX count and no crossfire issues to deal with.
I'd say 5870 and 820. More cpu, higher DX count and no crossfire issues to deal with.
good point
5870 uses much less power than a 4870x2, or 2 x 4870s which equates to much better battery life.
Spend $1000 on a gaming desktop. Use the price difference to buy this laptop if you really need one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220634 Hell, get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220688 But if you're dead set on getting that alienware, get the single 5870.

But yes I am set on that alienware. Hopefully they come out with dual 5870's by the time I order. Otherwise I'll go with a single.

Also you can get a lot more gaming power on that desktop you'll get, while still having a decent "gaming" laptop that can run what you need it to run.

Get a Asus or Gateway laptop, much more back for the buck, and none of the annoying LOLGAMER design.
Good lord, people, if he wants to get an Alienware, let him get it instead of bitching and moaning about it. It doesn't affect you. OP, go for the 5870 for the DX11, less power draw, that sort of thing.
Alienware laptops are pretty good, you pay more for gaming laptops anyway so it pretty much evens out. You can save money on a desktop, but you can't with a laptop. He obviously wants a laptop for mobility.
@ Vanman yes alienware is overpriced but not nearly as bad as apple, don't get me wrong apple is ok. @Beetle179 thank you I do want one for mobility that's why i'm doing the laptop. even with a desktop / labtop deal, I just don't want a desktop to deal with.
I'm not going to bring up a desktop because you want portability. I don't see why you can't save money and go with something by ASUS but with a plastic frame. Under normal usage it will be rather difficult to damage the laptop anyway. The metal frame isn't worth the extra money. Take out an insurance policy on the laptop for five years and you will save money. By the time your insurance is up you might be due for an upgrade. Still if you are hellbent on getting an Alienware go for the 5870 build. One last thing, be warned that they can look pretty stupid if you are going to class or hauling this thing around with the superbright LEDs all over. It's rather embarrassing during class to have something like that.
Just get the Asus laptop I suggested if you really want a gaming laptop. It'll run what you want, for cheaper. Alienware is overpriced, and you realize it, but you aren't going to buy a more reasonably priced laptop that's more than enough for your purposes?
Well the other laptop that always popped into my head at bestbuy that I always end up walking out with is the ASUS G Series G73JH-X1. But then the M17x always popped up as a option. As I said before one of my friends has a M15x and it just feels so durable while the Asus feels semi durable. I'm not saying I'm worried about it braking but the M15x just felt right like the difference between a Lamborgini murcielago and the kit version.. that is until 5 minutes ago I discovered this... Yeah, that's a lot better. Similar specs, and for like $300 cheaper. I still think you should get a desktop for gaming, and buy a less expensive laptop, but at least you're not buying an Alienware.
Get the Asus The asus also looks cooler IMO
more like $1000 dollars less i would have paid $2400 for the alienware
and now I can mabe get a mac mini with it
As I said before one of my friends has a M15x and it just feels so durable while the Asus feels semi durable.
Real laptops have "battlescars" :c00l: Really, it might feel cheap, but they're engineered to handle more than you think. Just because it gets a scratch or a dent after you dropped it doesn't matter, unless it's on the screen.
