Samsung Electronics plan to unveil the latest in its Galaxy line, S IV, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February next year, company officials and its local part suppliers told The Korea Times on Sunday.
A company official who declined to be named, told the daily news site the company is "ready" to unveil the Galaxy S IV in Barcelona next year, and the new device is expected to hit shelves globally a month later at the latest.
The timetable had been released three days after the Korean electronics giant's rival, Apple introduced its iPhone 5, which has received mixed responses from industry experts and consumers for seemingly lacking in revolutionary features.
The official also said since the smartphone is due nine months after May's debut of the Galaxy S III, it will be more than enough to curb Apple's latest iPhone, compatible with long-term evolution (LTE) networks. Sales of the Galaxy S III had reportedly hit 20 million in just over three months of its launch, according to the company in early September.
The new Galaxy is expected to be the firm's most powerful handset in terms of hardware specifications and software advancement, he said.
Executives from Samsung's local part suppliers also said the company's new phone will "definitely use" LTE networks, and sport its in-house Exynos-branded application processors and quad-core chips. Currently, the S III is using both Samsung's Exynos and Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors depending on the country.
The screen size of the S IV is expected to hit 5 inches from the current 4.8 inch screen size of its S III, while the phone will use Google's Android software and sport an organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, the official said.
"Samsung wants to keep its one-year product schedule and the Galaxy S IV will be the first to match that strategy. The S IV will see some external changes but retain its popular rectangular shape with rounded corner concept," an official from one of Samsung’s local partners told The Korea Times. This follows reports last month that the company is currently in talks with major American carriers to apply modified phone designs to avoid violating patents.
S3 - 29 May 2012 S4 - March 2013. For those of that are bad at months, that is less than 1 year apart from the old one. WTF? Unnecessary
I want to see it blow the Iphone5 out of the water.
S2 - 29 May 2012 S3 - March 2013. For those of you at months, that is less than 1 year apart from the old one. WTF? Unnecessary
it's called competing with apple.
it's called competing with apple.
But the 5 is so mundane, they don't need to.
Really.
So the 4 will be larger, and have a better processor.
It is weird how people think that only Apple has been doing incremental updates to their phones.
I just got my s3 last month and was enjoying my phone related flashy superiority :(

thats exactly how i felt when i got my skyrocket haha
if it's a massive improvement:
neat ill get one
If it's similar to the S3 and is just to pad phone sales:
why
At least the early announcement will make it easier for me to decide what phone to get in 2013.
My choices are:
-iPhone 5
-Lumia 920
-Galaxy S 4
-New HTC Phone (Two X?)
my s2 is less than 8 months old..
You know i love Samsung and everything (including my GS2) but there becoming just as bad as Apple. I mean they JUST released the Galaxy S3 and now this? Cmon!

Just released? It was released in May, 4 months is a long time in a market that moves this many units.
It's not like you HAVE to upgrade anyways, kind of like how you don't have to upgrade to an iPhone 5 if you have a 4S right now.
A year is a very long time technologically.
Yeah, every tech company usually announces stuff around every year, including Apple.
July 2012 to February 2013 is a short turnaround time though.

Apple announces their new phone always around this time of year.
But i agree with others, i dont think the S4 would be totally different compared to the S3, my guess is the same as iPhone, better CPU and some existing parts enhanced
.
larger than the s3? Why?
my thumb already has a hard time reaching across half the screen on my S3, why would they make it bigger
How are they (both samsung and apple) bad for releasing new phones? Does your current phone stop functioning when they release an updated version?
Yes.
Glad I have US Cellular! I can upgrade in 11 months :)
And people complain that Apple releases new iPhone models too often :v:
Even though I don't really like Android phones it's still cool to see what news they are going to bring in this model!

There's a big difference between Galaxy S3/S4 and iPhone 4S/5. The Galaxy S3 is already at the top of the Android benchmarks, whereas the 4S has a lower performance than even the S1.

My father has an S1, and I have a 4S, and you are completely wrong.

Well the Galaxy phones aren't the only ones that Samsung put out every year. They got dozens of phones in production, so it's not like they dropped all of the other ones in order to focus on menial upgrades to the Galaxy line up every year.
I hope they'll drop the "designed for humans, inspired by nature" bullshit.

Yeah, if it looks like another fucking pebble I'll be dissapointed
Doesn't this just mean they'll show it and release will be several months later? I I see no problem with it as long as my s2 keeps getting updates
How come like facepunch loves it when samsung releases a new phone every year and rates OP winner
but when a new iPhone is announced the OP is filled with dumbs?
I'm really sorry for this post if this is just me being an idiot but seriously, let's be fair here?
I'm looking forward to see what they included, interested to see if samsung can beat apple's new benchmark
My Galaxy S3 i9305 (aus 4G version) I pre-ordered isn't even out in Australia until the 20th of September :v:.
