Brett Peter Cowan, 44, pleaded not guilty to murder, indecent treatment of a child and interference with a corpse, however he was found guilty on all three charges.
Daniel's family were in tears as the verdict was read out.
Daniel Morcombe's father has told his son's killer he picked the wrong family during a raw victim impact statement read out during Brett Peter Cowan's sentencing.
Bruce Morcombe told the Brisbane Supreme Court Cowan's actions had ripped his family apart and he was haunted by thoughts of the "unspeakable" things he had done.
He said Cowan had robbed Daniel, a child who would never hurt a fly, of 70 years of life.
"You made one monumental mistake that day," he told Cowan.
"You picked on the wrong family. Our collective determination to find Daniel and expose a child killer was always going to win."
Crown prosecutor Michael Byrne read out Denise Morcombe's victim impact statement.
She wrote about the love for her son Daniel, an innocent boy who loved animals and wouldn't have hurt a soul.
Ms Morcombe still had nightmares and was haunted by images of her son lying in "dark eerie bushland being destroyed by wild animals".
"I made a vow to Daniel I would find out where he is and justice will be done," she said in her victim impact statement.
"I have lived and breathed each day to find the answers."
She said Cowan was a "sexual freak" who had no respect for human life.
I still remember when this all flared up when I was a kid. Glad it's been resolved after all this time. Hard to think it's been 11 years.
You picked on the wrong family.
I think his mistake was picking any family but okay.
I think his mistake was picking any family but okay.
True but these guys didn't give up, literally. This was in the news every 6 months, they always kept it relevant and fighting for answers, they refused to let this story out of the public's eye
I don't think a year has gone past where it hasn't been in the news once every few weeks.
I've never heard about this before.

I'm glad justice got did though.

The US rarely get any news like this from other Countries so it's no surprise
why is entrapment legal
why is entrapment legal
He wasn't forced to commit a crime he otherwise wouldn't by police, so it couldn't possibly be entrapment.
why is entrapment legal
He confessed on video and showed the undercover cops the location of where he raped and killed Daniel, put his clothes and put his corpse, they didn't force him to commit a crime, they just gained his trust and fooled him, it was genius

Kind of a shitty way to word something though. Like there's a right family to (attempt to) molest and murder a member of? "You should have done it to a less persistent family!"
What about all the other families going through a similar thing who haven't seen their perpetrator face justice? For such a sensitive issue, that might feel like a kick in the face.

Heat of the moment type of situations will make people say some pretty bold things
dude the way they caught this guy was fucking genius
the coppers did a really good job on this one, seriously impressive undercover work (i won't be surprised if they make an underbelly series on this shit)
why is entrapment legal
This wasn't entrapment, and also in Australia we have no entrapment.

To be really honest, it is a stupid thing to say but the father along with the mother has had the utmost determination to get an answer and some justice for this terrible thing that occurred, he was pissed off and upset but relieved, I think he can be excused on this one
UPDATE: Brett Peter Cowan sentenced to life with 20 years of time before applying for parole
Brett Peter Cowan will spend a minimum of 20 years behind bars for the murder of Daniel Morcombe.
The sentence is more than the mandatory minimum non-parole period for murder in Queensland.
But handing down the life sentence, Justice Roslyn Atkinson said she believed Cowan should never be released from prison, though that decision would be out of her hands.
"Whenever anyone is considering the prospect of your rehabilitation, they should consider my words," she said.
"You are a convincing liar."
Cowan also received a concurrent sentence of three-and-a-half years for indecent dealing with a child, and two years for interfering with a corpse, the maximum sentences for those two crimes.
The 945 days Cowan spent in pre-sentence custody will be taken into account, the judge said.
Cowan showed no reaction when hearing the sentence.
Justice Atkinson had called Cowan to his feet in Brisbane Supreme Court about 1pm before detailing the callous nature of his crime.
"You didn't look like a monster, you didn't look like a pedophile. You looked like an ordinary person," she told him.
"When you got him inside, you indecently dealt with him. He was horrified."
"You killed him so you wouldn't get caught."
Justice Atkinson said it would have taken more than a few seconds to kill the 13-year-old boy.
"Everything you did to that child is horrific and disgraceful," she said.
"I've seen no evidence in the months that you've been in this court ... that you ever felt any remorse."
Justice Atkinson told Cowan that he had an "apparently normal upbringing".
We're actually pretty good friends of the Morcombes. At one stage there a few years back, we were trying to help them find a new property to buy. Didn't ask if it was to live in or just as an escape, but we had a lot of talks with them and they're genuinely lovely people. Shortly after we actually found something they really loved, the case sparked up again and they had to put their focus back on that.
I'm just glad they've finally got closure, it was clear from talking with them that they had never been able to come to terms with it all, they looked almost hollow, lifeless most of the time despite doing their best to come across as completely fine and OK. Hope the bastard rots for life.

not that i'm defending it but that's pretty much what entrapment is

although maybe not because they didn't make him do those things i guess
i dunno who cares yay justice
Catching a convincing liar who can cover their tracks is big. Good for them.

No, that's not what entrapment is when relating to legal matters.
Entrapment: the act of public officers where they lure a suspected criminal into doing a criminal act.
If the officers had gotten the man to kill the boy and shit, that would be entrapment. This isn't.

That's not entrapment at all, they didn't tell him to go out and rape a boy, he invited them over for a barbie, they had a discussion and it lead to a solid confession and that wasn't once but three times and more during the whole sting, he confessed it on video and on audio, the evidence is solid
The undercover cops need to be rewarded on this, it was excellent police and investigation work

today i learned literally every undercover operation ever is entrapment
hey plainclothes officers are illegal too, they get you to trust that they are just normal people!!!
no, stop.
