WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff Sessions offered to resign in recent weeks as he told President Trump he needed the freedom to do his job, according to two people who were briefed on the discussion.
The president turned down the offer, but on Tuesday, the White House declined to say whether Mr. Trump still had confidence in his attorney general.
“I have not had that discussion with him,” Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, told reporters, responding to questions about whether the president had soured on Mr. Sessions.
Mr. Spicer’s remarks came after The New York Times reported that Mr. Trump had vented intermittently about Mr. Sessions since the attorney general recused himself from any Russia-related investigations conducted by the Justice Department. Mr. Trump has fumed to allies and advisers ever since, suggesting that Mr. Sessions’s decision was needless.
He has also blamed Mr. Sessions for the fallout from an executive order that the president signed for a travel ban on seven primarily Muslim countries, which courts have blocked.

Mr. Trump did not take him up on the offer.
Whoa this would be pretty big. Sessions is a hell a lot bigger than Flynn. If Sessions is ultimately disposable to trump who isn't.
its a bad sign when you're too extreme for the trump administration

eh it looks like it's more because trump is incapable of admitting any fault of his own

but also may not be that likely since trump wants to keep him on even if sessions did offer
The offer by Mr. Sessions to discuss resigning, however lightly he made it, was surprising from one of the president’s earliest and most vocal supporters. Mr. Sessions’s former spokesman, Stephen Miller, is now Mr. Trump’s main speechwriter and a policy adviser.
But two people close to the president said Mr. Trump does not want to replace Mr. Sessions.
The president is said to be aware of the potential fallout of trying to get another attorney general through a confirmation hearing and that in the interim, he would be left with Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who recommended a special counsel for the Russia inquiry.
Are we sure it's not rats fleeing a sinking ship?
Sessions is extreme, but he's not an idiot.

Whether Trump personally wants Sessions or not this is probably enough reason to keep him around for now.
Sessions is a scumfuck slimeball, but he's intelligent enough to operate politically, meaning he's been working to reduce the impact of Trump's idiocy on the President's approval ratings, hence the 'watered down' version of that pathetic travel ban they keep trying and failing to pass. Trump figures this gives him the perfect excuse to blame Sessions for the poor public reception of said travel ban, because god forbid he actually turn introspective for a change.
Trump is a man who is deeply mentally ill, and really belongs more in an old age home than any seat of power. Whatever neurodegenerative disease eats at him, it's making him more and more child-like. And the stress of the position is only making things worse for him.
That being said, I can't find much pity in my heart for the guy. Not when he holds the lives of so many in his hands, and treats his responsibility so lightly.
It's going to be so satisfying to see him finally break. Maybe once he's all alone, delusions shattered, facing a long prison sentence, maybe then I'll feel a little pity. Once he's placed where he can do nobody any more harm.

don't get your hopes up
Could we potentially be seeing a domino effect if Sessions does resign?
