its a single leak, and of the dev hardware (so final hardware will be a bit different, probably higher clocks), so do take this with a few buckets of salt.
Still its good to see that AMD may finally become competitive again.
the new cpu is the Zen one

Unfortunately, I already have a 4790K so the Zen isn't 100% appealing to me, but if this is true then that's fantastic news for AMD.
Offer a great competitive price against intel and they should be golden.
whether or not this means anything largely depends on how well the CPU frequency scales with zen parts. That part is *only* turboing to 3.2, and they certainly wouldn't come in at a low frequency and pass up beating intel as a matter of choice. The 4790 is also a few years old, two generations of intel CPUs have come out since and kaby lake will start coming out around the same time zen is set to.

Especially with Moore's law becoming more marginal returns at this point, people are more conservative with their CPU purchases if they've got a CPU within the past year or 2.
When you bring Intel's latest gen down to the same clock speeds it is still significantly out performed by Intel.
Hmm, maybe I'll have to actually consider an AMD CPU for my next build.
Although I would be interested in knowing the core count on that ES-1D chip ("Engineering Sample-1"?). If it's a quad-core, eight-thread chip like the i7s, that would be awesome. If it's an eight-core or higher, on a benchmark that scales across cores way better than most workloads do, that's something else entirely.
I'm mostly waiting for the zen cpu's to come out just so I can see whether intel or AMD is the better upgrade path for me (and hopefully other side effects of competition). Otherwise I might have considered upgrading by now.
Thats pretty cool that even though the clock speed is almost a full GHz lower and turbo is still under what the i7 and i5's base clock speed is, it still performs that well. I would want to see what will happen if AMD boosts it by a few MHz and see how they perform. I really wish AMD well and I've been waiting for this to release to upgrade my cpu

Gotta realise that AMD is usually cheaper than Intel, which hopefully Zen will be. Something comparable to an i7 for a much cheaper price will be fantastic.
I'm looking forward to benchmarks from retail units, once those exist.
Engineering samples are always a bit how you doing.
Those clock speeds are impressively low for the performance they have, can't wait to see what can be done by over clocking them
