• upgrading, new GPU or CPU/Mobo?

well, I have decided I may need to upgrade my computer but I'm unsure if I need to upgrade my CPU/Mobo or GPU. I have a budget of about $300USD. but I won't be upgrading until the end of November or early December, depends on what happens between now and next week. these are my current specs: [img]http://gyazo.com/9a2e310eb29bfbda6cfc2fe7b0c032c8.png[/img] my current PSU is a BFG 550watt. the Q6600 is currently overclocked to 3.3ghz but it's reading as 2.4ghz on Speccy. I only have 2gb of RAM installed because my 4gb pack random died but it was still under warranty and the replacement kit has already been shipped back. I have also been offered a second GTX 275 for a decent price so should I go for that and get a SLI motherboard and a new CPU, what do you guys think?
there isn't really anything you need to do, a 275 should be playing at that res fine get a Hyper 212+ or something and overclock that Q6600, I guess you could get an SSD if you feel it's worth it we're close to having a lot of new stuff released so it's not really worth making a big upgrade in case the new stuff is a better option or even just drops the price of current stuff
I actually have a Hyper 212+ and the Q6600 is overclocked to 3.3ghz.
I would keep the $300 and let it grow a bit more. You got an above-average PC right there. However, if you want to upgrade look into the i5 750/760 and get a new motherboard.
and really? the GTX 275 should be fine for 1600x900 but I can barely break 60 fps in some games (like CoD: BO, TF2, , L4D2, Bad Company 2, the STALKER games) at high settings with no AA, I'm getting low 30s to mid 40s in those games and others... seems a bit odd to me but I could just be dumb.
By break 60 you mean you still get 60 FPS average? That's believable for Stalker (unoptimized) and Bad Company 2. I don't know why L4D2 and TF2 are are getting that FPS though (is it that VSync thingy on). Oh and Call of Duty BlackOps is pretty crappy for optimization too I think. My brother is playing it right now.
I mean I never even reach 60fps.
Maybe your card/CPU is on it's last legs? Defrag? By the way upgrade your PSU too if you upgrade.
I defrag every 2 weeks. and the GTX 275 is a bit old to be honest, I got it from another FP memeber after he got a GTX 470. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] as for the games, they're all playable but the fps just seems a tad low, but like I said I could be dumb and be expecting more than I should be.

When you get your 4 GBs tell us how your games run. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] Wait are you "Skinny" on Steam?
no, it was like that when I had 4gb. I just put the 2gb in last week, but that would explain the CoD: BO issues a bit.
Are all drivers up to date? That's the last thing I could think of. So if your drivers are ok then either A) you have high expectations for your computer B) your video card is dying. I'm leaning towards A.
yes, I am Skinny on Steam. and I actually just downloaded the newest Nvidia drivers. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] the main reason I asking about an upgrade is that I've been told by multiple people that I should upgrade my CPU to something like the i5 750 but I wasn't really sure if that needed upgrading or if it was my GPU that needed an upgrade.
I have that exact same CPU, and I thought it wasn't worth it to upgrade to i5-750/760 from that.
Yeah I'm not sure either. It wouldn't hurt to upgrade to an i5 750/760 or a new GPU (GTX 470, 6870), but is it worth trying it out? How about you swap your GPU with a friend's to see if it's GPU?
yeah I'll just swap it with a 5970 or a 4870.
Why am I the only one posting here? I'm like one of the most illiterate regulars here. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] [QUOTE=Makol;26035304]heh, yeah I'll just swap it with a 5970.[/QUOTE] Sarcasm?
[QUOTE=thf;26035265]I have that exact same CPU, and I thought it wasn't worth it to upgrade to i5-750/760 from that.[/QUOTE] exactly what I thought, but it wouldn't hurt to ask others right? [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] [QUOTE=FalcoLombardi;26035305] Sarcasm?[/QUOTE] no actually. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] I know a guy who owns two 5970s in CF, maybe you've seen his build logs. I believe he has a third 5970 that's not in use for some reason.
Your PSU won't handle it. Is it Milky by any chance?
Crunic and fusionpoo. [url]http://www.facepunch.com/threads/991247-Work-Log-PC-P50-essence-red[/url] [url]http://www.facepunch.com/threads/929651-Work-Log-PC-A77F-Velvet-Jazz[/url] these guys. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] they have a third build log but I can't find it. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] here it is, [url]http://www.facepunch.com/threads/943336-Color-Choice-Gamma-Core?mode=linear[/url]
Well you can try that, but remember to get a beefier PSU.
