As a tit-for-tat sanctions war vaporizes U.S.-Russian space cooperation, the Russian government has boosted the budget of its Federal Space Agency by 1.8 trillion rubles ($52 billion) to modernize and expand its existing infrastructure and capabilities by 2020.The new program for Russian space activities through 2020 was quietly released on Tuesday, the same day that Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin issued a series of controversial statements painting the future of U.S.-Russian space cooperation in a bleak light.
According to Rogozin, Russia will not accept a NASA proposal to extend the life of the International Space Station, or ISS beyond 2020, and instead will be looking to other projects and partners. The new space policy, which pledges 1.8 trillion rubles toward modernization and development efforts throughout the Russian space industry, appears to be a step toward ensuring Russia is free to pursue its own interests in space after its ISS obligations are fulfilled in 2020.
Rogozin tweeted that Russia will discuss cooperative space projects with China at a summit meting in Beijing on May 19.
Be that as it may, Russia has extensive international obligations to fill in the near-term, a point that is made in the Roscosmos statement explaining the new plan. Indeed, the entirety of the 1.8 trillion rubles will be devoted to addressing near-term concerns, such as ensuring "the access and necessary presence of Russia in space."
Space race pls

Maybe we'll get to see Angara actually lift a payload.
But seriously this is a concerning development with the Russians refusing to cooperate with the United States after 2020. Rogozin sounds like a child.

He is, believe me. Romania has had a lot to deal with him because of Moldova
Russia is going to cut 4 years off of humanities greatest effort of international cooperation because the United States is taking a mild response to their military land grab. Good job.

Although the ISS original life span was to 2020, the US believed it could've gone till 2024 with funding. Now it seems Russia has the funding to extend it but they're using it as political leverage which is saddening.
what russia is doing right now is continuing the game after someone else already won.
Russia is clicking on the "wait, just one...more...turn..." button in Civilization V
You americans are so full of yourselves...
Russia is going to dominate space!
You americans are so full of yourselves...

Dominate? Nah
They will barely be able to compete with the private space industry that will soon properly develop in USA. If NASA gets proper funds then they have no chance.
Hopefully the US 1-ups Russia by increasing NASA's budget by $104 billion. A second space race would be really good for things as long as it stays civil up there.
We should just collab together and build ISS 2.0
We should just collab together and build ISS 2.0
Nah, leave that for a little while longer.
If there's one thing in or around our earth that I'm happy to milk for all its worth, it's a good space race.
By 2030 the new trend will be getting a moon house to spend the vacation.
Hopefully my plans of getting millionaire will happen and I'll be able to call all my buddies from 'murica to spend some time in mine Дворец зализывает раны in the red part of the moon (a.k.a. gorious best part of the moon by that time)
THE MOON WILL BE PUTINS NEW MOTHERLAND
ALL HAIL
We should just collab together and build ISS 2.0
Nah fucking International Moon Base, think bigger bro
I am being really optimistic, but maybe with this international dick waving and Nolan's new sci-fi film we can see a revitalization to going into space and actually go up to Mars ourselves.
how do we remove the ISS from space? let it crash into the atmosphere?
how do we remove the ISS from space? let it crash into the atmosphere?
Let it's orbit decay over time.
how do we remove the ISS from space? let it crash into the atmosphere?
Yup, destabilize It's orbit and then let It burn up over an ocean. Same as MIR.
Better to do that than to leave it up there to add to all the other junk which is orbiting the earth.

It's too bad they can't bring it back down safely, in pieces, and assemble it in a museum. It really deserves that. I'd say they should boost it to a higher orbit where it won't be in danger of hitting things until it can be safely returned to Earth.

I think it would be fitting to be the first "space heritage site" or museum that's open to the future space-faring public
52 billion huh? Is this where all the funding from the Sochi Olympics went?
So, how much of that money is it going to take to make their Protons stop falling out of the sky every other launch?
We should just collab together and build ISS 2.0
We can't have good things when we work together. The space industry being in a gutter for 20 years proves it
Nah they'll just use it to buy more vodka and then they'll fall even more
Oh maybe they will use some of that money to fix the problems they keep having with their protons.

Sorry, just made one of those posts I ended up regretting in the morning
While aerospace development is hugely important, "space races" specifically are sort of a waste of time and energy.
Just think of all the time spent developing the same shit that your opponent is developing, cooperation is far more effective as you can pool your resources. It's really shitty that people really can't be interested in the future of the human species unless it's some petty nationalistic competetion

Because 6 losses within 3 1/2 years is perfectly fine. And don't forget the Soviets(At the time they were) who have also died.

7 men. Just as many as there were in Columbia

All people lost in space is a tragedy. Using that as gloating material is immature and disrespectful.

The International Space Station is one of the most important achievements in manned spaceflight. This isn't kerbal space program. Furthering human spaceflight is more complex than launching a three man crew on a two year journey to Jupiter in a cone. The lessons learned in Zero-G habitation and physiology are invaluable for our safe future expansion into space. While we haven't been giving our full potential, we haven't been idle for 20 years.

Yes because the Russians are well known for their safety and lack of death during their space flights.

Putin's been playing too much Civ5, and I guess he's prepping for Beyond Earth.
