• What's required to get this server rack up and running?

Hello, recently I bought a Dell PowerEdge 1855 on ebay, and later found out I must have a server rack chassis and a 2100w power supply to get it running. What else do I need to get this running? Also, I don't think my parents would appreciate me running that at their house. I'm in LA and is there a place I can take my soon-to-be server rack and host it there? If so, how much would it cost? Thanks guys!
You're looking for a service known as "colocation". Try "los angeles colocation" on Google.
first off, the 1855 is a blade server, so you need a dell blade enclosure, not a server rack cabinet. what are you looking at using it for?
Garry's Mod server hosting, web server, voice server, etc. I need to get a blade chassis. [editline]14th July 2014[/editline] Also, i'm only a 14 year old, trying to research in this type of stuff. I make my own gamemodes and stuff on Garry's Mod, and i'm ready to host my own server that I own. I don't have a money tree.
You could take it to McDonalds and use it on their free wifi?
You could take it to McDonalds and use it on their free wifi?
I'm being completely serious about this. How much would it cost to just get this hosted for power and network usage?? I'm considering about just letting it run at my house. I've got 80MBit/s download, 45MBit/s upload, why not?
Yeah. I don't know what colocation rates are, and they probably vary from facility to facility even within the same city. If I were you I'd just look around the web. They're usually pretty good at posting prices
For their power consumption and performance, I'm not really sure if they're really worth using at all.
Colocation usually includes power consumption in the fee, but it's best to look at each company individually to see what they provide for the money. Given how outdated the 1855 is, I really think you'd be better off acquiring a dedicated server from a company that provides them rather than colocation. Colocation is usually more expensive than renting one of the companies own dedicated servers (for low-mid range hardware), unless you have high-end hardware. o.O
Before you spend any more money, do some reading on server configuration, racking and networking and so forth. You're opening a whole box of turd sandwiches otherwise.

I already have the server, ram, hard drive slot thingy, and ram (got both today). Should I get a chassis and power supply, or am I better off just reselling it? I just want to own my own server that I won't have to pay monthly for and I can run at my house (internet isn't a problem)
I think buying and setting your own up is going to be a nightmare for you, especially a blade enclosure. You'd be better off setting up a VPS as aforementioned and managing it remotely, that way infrastructure is already live, running costs are covered and you have piece of mind.
yeah, sorry kid, but you wasted some money here. What you would have wanted was a rackmount server, not a blade server. rackmount could have been thrown into pretty much any rack cabinet. but with the blade, you would have to buy the blade chassis. If you colo'd it, you'd be paying out the ass for it all, as in hundreds, if not a thousand or two a month for the damn thing, which isn't worth it. also, its not worth it for running at home either, as you can get some rackmount servers that's still somewhat old, so its not too expensive, yet isn't too old to not run. unless you're in a business, i wouldn't really recommend colo'ing servers. for what you wanna run, i'd recommend just renting a dedicated server to run gmod and a voice server on and then pay for a web host. owning your own server hardware seems cool and all, but you really need to pay attention to many details. I've added you to steam if you ever wanna chat more about this stuff.
Just sell it on and use a normal desktop as a server. Also, just because a power supply is rated that high means that it can take loads up to that much, it will not pull that all the time.
