An 18-year-old man who was being investigated over terrorism has been shot dead after stabbing two police officers in Melbourne's outer south-east.
The dead man, who recently had his passport cancelled, was considered a "person of interest" by authorities and was being investigated over terrorism.
Police said it was unclear whether earlier reports that the man made threats against the prime minister were true.
"This is early stages of an investigation. We need to understand ... if threats had been made," Acting Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said.
"What I will say is and what I can be very confident on is there were no specific threats made and that's consistent with what we have said now in a range of matters in a range of forums."
The man, whose family are from Afghanistan, had been associated with the radical Islamic group called Al-Furqan.
"When our police members have approached this young man, one's extended his hand to shake his hand and the response has been he's been stabbed in the arm," he said.
"The attacker's then turned on the second police member and stabbed him three or four times in the body and in the head.
"The first wounded member has then shot and killed the young man."
I'm sorry, but if you stab a police officer, you have everything that's coming to you.

Fucking crazy bastard.
As soon as this happened my Facebook feed was full of 'kill all Muslims'. Sometimes, I hate my country.
Kill all extremist would be more correct.
Try to shake a hand, get stabbed in the arm. Yeah this kid was mentally fucked.
Kill all extremist would be more correct.
How do you know who is a potential extremist? Everyone can snap. These people just tend to do it a lot more often.
Killing extremists would already be too late and I guess even there SJW's could argue that they could be helped and integrated into Society again.

I know you're trying to be funny. But you can't compare shooting a suspect AFTER he stabbed a police officer to discharging 2 magazines into an unarmed suspect isn't
The action were justified.
Or shooting an unarmed suspect in the back
blast his head away with 80 bullets and still handcuff him
Shooting a cosplayer
Shooting an unarmed man in bed because the police raided the wrong house
Pointing an assault rifle at unarmed people threatening to kill them all
Shooting a suspect because he tried to kill himself

The thing is, things are not going the right way at the moment and instead of defending and say it's the way it is and everything is fine shooting a whole magazine into someone's face, we shall go forth and say: "Well there IS a problem"
Is it the training, the mentality of the personell? Or shall we be ignorant and find one cause alone like... violent videogames, USA, or guns alone.
It is a US phenomenon, there is no denying in that but it's also the minorty of all cops since such cases are the only ones getting reported and attention, we get that. But it's still happening way too often and it makes and should people question training or capibility of individual officers.
Even a general in the US army said that this is not the way it should be. If marines would act like that in a crisis zone, they would be discharged and sent home.
You simply do not pull out a weapon if you do not intend to kill anyone, you do not calm a situation down by yelling insults and direct commands at someone over and over again, not giving the other side any chance to react or explain the situation.
Well he should feel proud. He's royally fucked his family from having a normal life.
It's hard enough being Muslim in Australia let alone being related to a 'terrorist'.
pls let there be another surge in the middle east
I was too young the first time, let me go soldiering after uni plssss

Why in the name of fuck has ANYONE rated this dumb (more to the point why were there more dumbs than any other rating before I rated agree)? This guys stabbed two fucking people! Police officers at that! And he apparently intended very much to kill one of them judging by the fact that he stabbed them in the body and head. What the fuck do people expect to happen? A stern talking and a smack on the back of the wrist?

Hey dude I don't think you understand the U.S law for firearms.
A police and private citizen is allowed to use deadly force if they feel their life or limb is in danger.
If you shoot someone you make sure they die, it's illegal to shoot to wound.
Shooting someone 80 times show's that they were panicking and in true fear of their life, when I was getting trained for my g licence, we were taught to empty a magazine into a threat, then handcuff them in case they weren't dead.
It's easy to criticize when you weren't there with the cops in a situation where they felt their lives where in danger and go ooh this is wrong.

You still haven't addressed "shooting a suspect because he was trying to kill himself"
"Shooting an unarmed suspect in the back"
"Shooting a cosplayer"
"Tazing an asthmatic to death"
"Shooting an unarmed man in bed"
You telling me they were threatened then?
why didnt they just shoot him in the leg or taze him ;--;

Tony Abbott's approval is way down so they're taking advantage of the ISIS thing to do some old fashioned fearmongering
why didnt they just shoot him in the leg or taze him ;--;
Because you shoot at the largest target, the centre of seen mass which is usually the torso to reduce the chances of you missing. Maybe they didn't have a Tazer on them.
This is a pretty straight forward case, the kid rocked up to the police station with a knife with the intent to harm police. He managed to stab 2 before being shot dead. It's not like police shot him first then stabbed each other to frame him. The fact that muslim leaders didn't condemn his actions and instead questioned the police response further alienates the Islamic community.
