My dad recently switched out my power supply units (for whatever fucking reason) so I was stuck with a shoddy, poor looking power supply. I got it to work but for the most part the fan was a bit loud. Not loud enough to be annoying, just noticable. My brother was on and apparently the computer just shut off. The yellow LED light is still on, but the computer does not turn on. Switching the outlet of the power supply to another outlet in the surge protector lets the fan whirr for only a moment before going back to nothing. Is this power supply dead?

Got it working, but it just hums and whirrs. No display or anything. Got a video too.

I think it's safe to assume it's dead?

Any help?
I'd take it out of your computer immediately. No sense in having a PSU in your computer if it's hella old. If that thing goes, it can do a lot of damage.
I had a problem similar to that once, it turned out to be the motherboard.

Funny thing is, I actually bought this up with my Dad and he said the PSU wasn't old at all. Infact, he was using it a few days ago and it worked fine.

I'm starting to think this might be the case too... I really don't wanna think that though, haha.
I also think that it is probably the motherboard. If the PSU was dead, then I don't think the motherboard LED would be on.

Ugh, I really hope it doesn't turn out this way. My family doesn't have a ton of money as it is, so I have no idea if I could afford a new motherboard. I really hope that I get lucky and it's just the power supply. Thanks for the help though everyone.
Check if the Power Buttons are connected to the Panel on the Motherboard. That happened me once.

I'm pretty sure they are connected correctly, otherwise it wouldn't have turned on the first time I had used it (before it stopped working).
I actually tried a paper clip to jumpstart the PSU (look up the paperclip psu trick) and it doesn't work when I do it. However, plugging the 20/24 pin into the motherboard makes it spin then stop, or in some cases, spin for a long period of time but no POST beep. I'm pretty sure this is the power supply at this point, so I'm going to go ahead and try to get a replacement.

Check if the RAM Cards are attached correctly, that spinning then stopping thing happened to me and that solved it.
If the fan inside the PSU is stopping when using the paperclip then the PSU is stuffed.

Also, i couldn't tell what colour the power LED was in the video. If it is solid amber then it is the PSU.
Dells have diagnostic LEDs that try point you to what part died.

Just tried it again, for the hell of it.
Same result. I've reseated everything multiple times before. I'm just leaving it up to the fact that the PSU is dead, and I'll try getting another sometime soon.

The fan never started up with the paperclip trick at all.
And yes, it's solid amber. I'll get the PSU replaced soon. Thanks for the help everyone.
