PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota would be the first state in the U.S. to approve a law requiring transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their sex at birth if the governor signs a bill passed Tuesday by the state Senate.
The Senate voted 20-15 to send the bill to Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard, who initially responded positively to the measure but said last week he'd need to study it more before making a decision.
Advocates say the bill is meant to protect the privacy of students, but opponents say it discriminates against vulnerable adolescents. CBS affiliate KELO in Sioux Falls reports that those opposed say that in addition to the likelihood it will lead to bullying, they also question the constitutionality of the bill and fear it will cost the state millions in lawsuits.
--wring article, sorry--
I can understand why.
I ahd fascist for another atricle i meant to post
good god i'm retarded
Under the plan, schools would have to provide a "reasonable accommodation" for transgender students, such as a single-occupancy bathroom or the "controlled use" of a staff-designated restroom, locker room or shower room
They perpetuate the Huckabee "dress up as a girl" myth but I guess its something.
And whose privacy exactly is this supposed to protect? Do these lawmakers not care about the way this might make transgender people feel?
The reason that transgender people use bathrooms corresponding to their gender is because they want to be recognized as such. What this is basically doing is telling transgender people that the feelings that they have, of not feeling comfortable with their biological sex, are not legitimate. I am very surprised at the fact that we are still having these kinds of discussions...
I can understand why.
Okay, why?
I don't see anything unconstitutional about this.
I am pretty sure discriminating is unconstitutional, but I am not from the USA, so I am not the one who should talk about that.
Yeah, let's just keep trans kids from going to the bathrooms they deserve to go in and force them to go to their school's Designated Trans Bathroom™. Y'know, instead of putting forth an effort to incorporate them into normal life and letting trans girls or boys - gasp - go to the girl's or boy's washroom respectively! That would be such a shock to the poor normal kids. They're supposed to be there to learn how to get a job, not how to accept others!
The Cis are at it again I see.
They truly are the world's Biggest Disappointment.

What stops people from claiming that they ID as the opposite sex to get to go into locker rooms and bathrooms? I'm legit curious
Wow, so they force use of a special bathroom for trans people now just to make sure that none of them manage to integrate or be treated as normal people by their peers. That doesn't sound like segregation at all.

Now seems like a pretty good time for you to take a break from posting I think. And tumblr too maybe.

To be honest if it makes other kids that legitimately uncomfortable, it's a reasonable thing to do. Bathrooms are largely separated based off of biological things in the first place (tampon dispensers, urinals, etc), plus the whole locker room peeping shit.
It's just a bad situation in general. Unisex single bathrooms make sense. When the funding can be produced, unisex general bathrooms would be the best move.
I'm for the integration of trans persons, but this issue I just don't know what the solution is to be honest. I haven't heard many arguments except for those who think trans people should be confined to their biological sex's designated restroom.
Advocates say the bill is meant to protect the privacy of students
Yup, outing students as transgender. That's definitely going to protect their privacy.
I certainly don't think "transgenered" bathrooms is the solution, unless you see it as a step towards unisex bathrooms.

You know how /pol/ blames the Jews every time something bad happens? You're the other side of that coin.

Blaming all cis people quite regularly is not gonna win you any allies.
God dammit, My state!
Well if you take a step back, you realize there's a really fucking simple way of doing this. Doctors notes. That's right, if your transitioning, then you should be under psychological council, or under council of a doctor, how fucking hard would it be for a doctor to say, "hey, steve is actually steph, and should use the ladies room instead of the mens room". But we don't want to see it that way because we want to make a big fucking deal about this shit.
Well then you go into the realm where people with gender dysphoria who are not transitioning medically are not addressed.

"Other side of what coin? Jew's musta stole it"
If you diagnosed yourself with it, then you have no excuse to use the facilities. If you've been diagnosed by a physician then they shouldn't have any problems helping you make arrangements with the school.
Perhaps but you said transitioning, which is not applicable to everyone with gender dysphoria.

would it make the kids any less uncomfortable if someone who looks and acts exactly like a boy were forced to use the girls' restroom?
I don't get why not all bathrooms can be unisex.

It is far more than a simple flick of a switch, friend. The current prevailing hypothesis in neuroscience is that gender is correlated to a "body map" of sorts in the brain. The extent of the correlation is unknown as well as what the body map actually consists of, but it seems that cis men have largely the same map as each other, and cis women with each other as well. What happens to "make" a person transgender is very likely a neurological condition where the map is incongruous to your actual body. This also holds a potential explanation for non-binary people too, because the map seems that it can be configured in multiple ways.
It may be a bit more nebulous than a concrete patterning in the brain, but at the very least it is probably a collection of neurological traits that are present from birth.
Now, of course, people can say they're trans if they're not (I haven't heard of any claims like that made for malicious purposes in any case) - but trans people will have the experience that any potential fakers lack, as well as probably a few acquaintances who can back it up. Someone faking it likely would not know how to act or dress and would probably eventually slip up. Like, it would have to be a consistent act throughout the start of it to the end of their high school career, all to be voyeuristic with your frigging classmates.
It's just not likely. It may be more so in later life, but again, I haven't heard of any cases where somebody said they were trans just to sneak into a bathroom...
I think we should let kids piss where they want, so long as it's in a toilet. :v:
I don't get why not all bathrooms can be unisex.
inefficient and expensive as fuck
I'm looking forward to the backlash when everyone realizes that some men are now -required- to use the women's room
Well then you go into the realm where people with gender dysphoria who are not transitioning medically are not addressed.
You can probably get a doctors note from a psychiatrist/therapist if you've been diagnosed, and if you haven't been diagnosed it's unfair at that point to expect an establishment like a school to just let you use the other bathrooms just like that.
inefficient and expensive as fuck
expensive how?
What stops people from claiming that they ID as the opposite sex to get to go into locker rooms and bathrooms? I'm legit curious
The fact that you'd need a doctors note to do this in the first place.
