The bill, House Bill 2007, would allow anyone 21 or older to legally possess up to an ounce of the drug. Someone 21 or over could legally grow five marijuana plants; up to an ounce of marijuana could be exchanged between of-age consumers, but could not be sold. A tax of $50 would be levied on every ounce transferred from a grow facility to a retail store. Fifty percent of the tax would go into Arizona’s general fund, 30 percent would go toward education; the remainder would go to public health and educational programs. Public smoking would continue to be banned. Reaction to the idea is split, even among marijuana users. “All these kids are doing to get it, and then what’s going to happen?” asked Richard Baker, who uses medical marijuana to treat rheumatoid arthritis but opposes recreational use. “We’re going to have a bunch of flunkies,” Baker said, adding that marijuana has dulled his memory. Meantime, a man who asked to be identified only as “Stev-o” said enforcing existing marijuana laws is a waste of tax dollars. “I think it costs us more to try to stop it than what it would actually cost to allow it to be legal,” he said, adding that he smokes marijuana recreationally to de-stress and treat sporadic pains. Recreational marijuana use is currently legal in Colorado and Washington State. Recreational use is set to become legal in Oregon on July 1, while voters in Alaska approved recreational use in November.
Personally i hope it passes, despite the conservative leaning of this state everyone and their fricken mother smokes pot around here. I can only hope for the day when i can sit on my front balcony, pipe in hand, with a smug look on my face as some uptight anti cannabis moron passes me by and knows there isint a single damn thing he or she can do about it.
Fuck yeahhh It's like watching gay marriage creep across the US. Who'll be next?
Bill is a pretty chill dude. But seriously, it's mostly up to the ground game in these conservative states. Regardless of what the polls might say on the issue, unless there's a wellspring of support on election day the status quo will remain supreme. Florida had a measure to legalize medical marijuana last November and it was defeated because less than half of the people who claimed they would vote Yes failed to show up on election day.
when is maryland gonna hurry the hell up and legalize it too? it feels like we're a prime candidate but i've yet to see much other than mentions of decriminalization

I'm not upset about it anymore anyway, it was just for medical use, and the only people that really need it are the old scumbags who voted against it.
just the name itself should be grounds enough to legalize it i mean "maryland" come on now
Meantime, a man who asked to be identified only as “Stev-o” said enforcing existing marijuana laws is a waste of tax dollars
What an odd name.

As an AZ resident, I couldn't be more excited for this bill to pass. Its about time already.
... "Sweet, let's have a bowl before we go." *3 hours later* "Shit dude, I think we forgot about the vote..." "Yep..."
While this is a small first step there's a lot a of bad to this... At the time no reliable test detects use within hours- so any user found driving can be found guilty of a dui regardless of if they where high at the time or not. No state that I know of has given use "protected from discrimination" status- meaning employers can base hiring/ firing based on drug testing. Even the states that passed medical mj allow firing for its use- as to be considered a prescription (and the legal protections that would bring) the FDA would have to reclass it/ allow it to be prescribed federally.
