how soon until anime runs for president?
Getting mad about anything Merriam-Webster adds is dumb. M-W is a reactionary dictionary, it always has been. It just reflects how English changes over time, it doesn't define which words are "real words" and which ones "aren't."
How mainstream is the word? I've only really heard it from weebs and people making fun of weebs.
I think they're just pulling words out of a hat to add new stuff to their dictionaries.
I think they're just pulling words out of a hat to add new stuff to their dictionaries.
Why? It's possible to run into it in memes, may as well provide a definition. They do it for other slang-ish shit.
Merriam-chan noticed

Merriam-Weebster. :vomit:
But Senpai already is a word with an existing definition? Why would the change the definition when it's basically used the way it's supposed to be used?
"Senpai" is kind of an odd addition, I have to say, seeing as it's literally a foreign word that's used almost 100% in reference to its use in Japanese.
I thought people only used Senpai ironically.
I thought people only used Senpai ironically.
you'd be surprised
I think they're just pulling words out of a hat to add new stuff to their dictionaries.
They have to come up with some way to get people to buy new dictionaries now that we all just use our phones
i wonder what their requirements are for inclusion, i really can't see senpai sticking around much longer, i've already seen a decline of usage compared to a couple years ago
It was going to happen anyway, considering they added other weaboo words like tsunami, origami, ninja, honcho and tycoon.
It was going to happen anyway, considering they added other weaboo words like tsunami, origami, ninja, honcho and tycoon.
Since when is Tycoon a weaboo word?
Since when is Tycoon a weaboo word?
That's the joke. Honcho originates from the Japanese word "Hanchou" (meaning "squad leader") and Tycoon originates from "Taikun" ("great prince", basically calling the rich royalty due to their business-based wealth). "Sayonara" originates from Japan, too.
Nobody complained about karaoke.
Because karaoke doesn't stab you in your sleep when you change your daily routine.
People getting mad at dictionaries adding slang and modern meme words is my favorite thing about the Internet, because everyone who whines about it immediately outs themselves as a dumbfuck.
Thing I don't like about dictionaries these days is words can die almost as fast they're made in this internet age. I mean, how much usage is this word going to see outside of anime once people get bored of going "~senpai noticed me~"?
If "fam" ever appears in the dictionary, I think I'll honestly end up pulling my hair out.
Why? It's an incredibly common term used across the country. If lickety-split can be in the dictionary, right alongside bumfuzzle and gardyloo, who cares? Gardyloo is a term used way in the past explicitly in Edinburgh to warn people when it was customary to dump your shit bucket out the window. A slang term for throwing shit out your window in one city is in the dictionary - why can't an internationally understood piece of widespread slang like "fam" be added? That's the point of the dictionary, so someone 230 years down the line can read a tweet and say "oh that's what he meant."
Is fam really that common? I never hear it outside of people shitposting.
