I've always wondered, why is pointing out the rules something that people get banned for?

because the mods don't like some one else doing their job, even though it helps them alot, and less new people get banned if other people are allowed to point out the rules, it's not really any of your concern. Just don't do it.

Being an admin or moderator in any community can hardly be called a job. It's more of a choice to make the place better. It's not as if the moderators [b]have[/b] to do what they do, or get paid for doing it.

If you're not a moderator, you cannot moderate. Therefore, you aren't doing their job.
You should ban people who are wrong about rules, but if someone says stuff like "this belongs in fast threads" it's an indicator to the user that he did something wrong, not a "HA, FAGGOT, YOU MADE A MISTAKE" kind of message.
Oh, and regarding the "confusing new users"... well, let's just say mods themselves don't know the rules very well.
They ban for random shit cause they feel like it.

Nobody said anything about moderating. Would you really report someone for posting in a wrong forum? Then the person will be banned, and he'll think, what the fuck did I get banned for, and leave this place.

There are tons of threads on this forum that can be identified as troll threads. Unfortunately, many users don't realize they are being trolled, including the mods, when someone points out that they're trolling, by reverse-trolling they get banned.

Well a ban really is a only a slap on the wrist, it just teaches new members what to not do.
Also, there's a "troll" button on the report post menu if I remember correctly.

If it's a real offense, I don't think the mod's will care if it didn't exactly fit into the three choices in the menu.
Although it would probably be best just to send an PM to the appropriate mod.
Or just ignore it, the mods rarely miss anything.
