:siren: EXPLANATION :siren:
What I'm going to do is easy to understand. I will open my Winamp player and write as much basic info as I know about the band that will be there. I will use difficulty system too. Difficulty system is made for people that will try to learn more about that music. Difficulty reflects how hard is to understand that band's music, how much research do you need to fully know it, how hard is to listen to it. I hope this will help you a lot. All difficulty ratings:
* - one star means that it is easy to listen and understand that band's music. You don't need to get used to, lets say vocals to like this band.
** - two stars means that it is a bit harder to listen and understand the band's music. You need to listen more to that music and you need tiny bit of knowledge of old rock to enjoy it.
*** - three stars mean that it's a little hard to understand the band's music. You need to listem more to that music and you need mediocre knowledge of old rock to enjoy it.
**** - four stars mean that it's hard to understand band's music. You need to listen to more of that band's music, you need to know a lot about old rock and you need to get used to, let's say vocals to enjoy it.
***** - five stars mean that it's fucking hard to understand band's music. You need to listen to a lot of that band's music, you need to know a lot about old rock and you really, really need to get used to specifics of that band.
:banjo: ALRIGHT, LET'S START THEN :banjo:
Led Zeppelin
Genre: Hard Rock
Formed in: 1968
People: Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass guitar), Robert Plant (vocals), John Bonham (drums).
Key song: "Stariway to Heaven"
Difficulty: **** (specific vocals).
Ahhh, Led Zeppelin. You must be an idiot if you don't know them. LZ is English band that formed back in late 60s. The number might scare you, but their music changed the view of rock forever. Their guitarist Jimmy Page is often considered the best guitarist of all time, because of insane guitar solo's in almost every song.
"Stairway to Heaven" is the song from their forth vinyl, "Led Zeppelin IV". I don't really know what to say about that song. It's perfect in every aspect. The building tense and breaking point is insane and the solo... The solo is what made this song incredibly good. "Stairway to Heaven" is not only often considered the greatest rock song of all time, it is often considered as greatest song of all time!
"Stairway to Heaven": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81eSIwsLcWg
Van Halen
Genre: Hard Rock
Formed in: 1972
People: Eddie Van Halen (guitar), Alex Van Halen (drums), Wolfgang Van Halen (bass), David Lee Roth (vocals).
Key song: "You Really Got Me"
Difficulty: If you like heavy music, then **, if not **** (heavy guitar solos).
Van Halen brothers were insane. They had the talent that no one had. Formed in 1972 they have built popularity after releasing first album "Van Halen". Almost every song from that album gained big popularity, especialy "Running with the Devil", "Eruption", "You Really Got Me".
"Running With The Devil" was popular because of it's catchy lyrics. Everyone knows how to sing line "Running With The Devil".
"Eruption" was popular because it showcased Eddie's talent. It's a 2 minute guitar solo which proves that you don't need 10 minutes to show all your talent *cough* Dragonforce *cough*.
The most popular song is "You Really Got Me". It's one of rare examples when cover version beats the original. It might not have insane guitar solo, but it sounds better than original with that electric guitar fills and tougher vocals.
"You Really Got Me": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB8WHA3WWz0
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Genre: Southern Rock
Formed in: 1964
People: (don't know about current, so this is original lineup) Ronnie Van Zant (vocal), Allen Collins (guitar), Steve Gaines (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass), Bob Burns (drummer).
Key Song: "Sweet Home Alabama"
Difficulty: *** (southern style)
Lynyrd Skynyrd... Find a southern american who doesn't know them. This band was legendary. Formed in 1964 it gained popularity in southern america in 1972. The original Skynyrd lived for very short time, because of plane crash of 1977, where Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines died. After that crash the band was lost forever. Currently, Skynyrd is not as good as it used to be.
"Sweet Home Alabama" is a legendary song. I think that every southern american knows it. It appeared on their second album and instantly became one of the most popular songs in the world.

Pink Floyd
Genre: Space Rock
Formed in: 1964
People: David Gilmour (guitar, vocal), Syd Barrett (guitar, vocal), Richard Wright (keyboard), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass)
Key Song: There are too many songs that are incredible.
Difficulty: ***** (space feel, guitar solos, sometimes depression, extreme emotions).
I don't know where to begin. Pink Floyd is british space rock band formed in 1960s. They are very well known for their philosophical lyrics, great cover art, soft vocals, great emotions and general weirdness. They are known for distinctive style that no one has. They are completely different from other classic rock bands. When you listen to Pink Floyd, you feel like you are travelling trough space, that's why this band is very popular in scene of stoners. Their most criticaly acclaimed album "The Dark Side of Moon" is perfect in every aspect. It's like Beethowen or Mozart in rock. It captures the feeling that you are together with the music, you merge into it. It creates relaxing atmosphere and the end of album shows great breaking point.
My personal favourite of Pink Floyd is "Echoes". It's a 23 minute symphony of emotions, space travelling and strange feelings. I listen to ir before I go to sleep, because all the space travel gives me sleepiness.
My other favorite is "Time". It brings big sadness and emotion to me because when you think about it, the song is speaking truth. I'd like to hear that song at my funeral.

Jimi Hendrix
Genre: Hard Rock
Active: 1966-1970
Key song: Purple Haze
Difficulty: **** (guitar solos)
In 1942 the legend was born. Greatest guitarist of all time, Jimi Hendrix became popular at 1967 in Monterey Pop Festival. His incredible talent gained him the earlier mentioned title. His popularity was at the top in Woodstock festival. I think that Woodstock and Hendrix are synonims. He was popular among hippies because of his psychedelic style. He was so talented, that he could play guitar with his fucking teeth! You know where that famous guitar burning thingy came from? From Jimi fucking Hendrix! Too bad he died young (27).
"Purple Haze": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIvs4j4IniA
Guns n' Roses
Genre: Hard Rock
Formed in: 1985
People: The original lineup was Axl Rose (vocals), Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), Izzy Stradlin (guitar), Steve Adler (drums).
Key song: Sweet Child o' Mine
Difficulty: *** (vocals are an aquired taste)
Guns n' Roses were an American band formed in 1985, who were heavily influenced by rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith. Best known for songs such as "Sweet Child o' Mine", "Welcome to the Jungle", "November Rain" and "Knockin' on Heavens Door", Guns n' Roses is possibly one of rocks biggest triumphs and disasters at the same time, due to most of the band walking out after Axl Rose went slightly mad with power.
"Sweet Child o' Mine", from the bands first album "Appetite for Destruction", incorporated a simple and recognisable main riff with a guitar solo which builds up momentum and leads to an amazing climax. Coupled with possibly Axl's best lyrics, it is widely regarded as one of rock's legendary songs.

(thanks for evlbzltyr, it's his info).
Metallica
Genre: Heavy Metal
Formed in: 1981
People: Lars Ulrich (drums), James Hetfield (vocal), Kirk Hammett (guitar), Robert Trujillo (bass).
Key song: One
Difficulty: **** (brutal drums, sometimes the music is very, very heavy).
Metallica formed back in early 80s. Theyr music is easily recognized because of agressiveness, fast tempos, insane guitar solos and for heavy beginings. Almost every song begins agressively, the first second into song you can already tell it's Metallica. They are the part of "Big Four" along side with "Anthrax", "Megadeth" and "Slayer". Metallica lost a part of their popularity after the "Napster scandal" when Lars Ulrich and other band members filled a lawsuit against the P2P program which let people to download Metallica's music for free. Every album of Metallica was criticaly acclaimed, except for "Load" and "ReLoad". I believe that "One" showcases the talent of every band member, that's why I chose it as key song.
"One":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzgGTTtR0kc
Black Sabbath
Genre: Heavy Metal
Formed in: 1968
People: Tommy Iommi (guitar), Ozzy Osbourne (vocal), Bill Ward (drums), Geezer Butler (bass).
Key song: Paranoid
Difficulty: *** (specific voice).
Black Sabbath formed back in late 60s by all of the original members. The dad of Black Sabbath is considered Ozzy Osbourne, probably because of his fame. Black Sabbath is easily recognized because of tuned down guitars and sometimes agressiveness. Black Sabbath is often considered the best heavy metal band as well as the most influental one. In 1979 Ozzy was fired from the band because of his drinking problems. The new vocalist was also very famous - Dio. Altough Ozzy was fired, Black Sabbath was still a popular band.
"Paranoid": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBWcRMonvWA
AC/DC
Genre: Hard Rock
Formed in: 1973
People: Brian Johnson (vocal), Angus Young (guiatr), Malcolm Young (guitar), Cliff Williams (bass), Phil Rudd (drums).
Key Song: Back in Black
Difficulty: ** (mildly specific vocals)
AC/DC is probably best known Australian rock band. They formed back in 1973 Sydney, by the Angus brothers. Theyr first vocalist, Bon Scott died in 1980 because of drinking. Yeah, he actualy died because of fucking drinking. He was replaced by Brian Johnson. They have the same voice and same looks if you ask me. AC/DC is considered one of the most succesful hard rock bands. They sold over 200 million albums worldwide! Theyr song "Back in Black" is often considered to be the best hard rock and best song in total. The Rolling Stone magazine ranked them as 72nd in "100 greatest artists of all time".
"Back in Black": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXaZmY52gHM
The Rolling Stones
Genre: Rock and Roll
Formed in: 1962
People: Mick Jagger (vocals), Keith Richards (guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), Ronnie Wood (bass).
Key song: Satisfaction
Difficulty: * (they are very easy to get into).
The Rolling Stones showed the world how Rock n Roll should sound. They became the standard of Rock. Rolling Stones is no doubt one of the most succesful rock bands in the world. Fuck, anything with Mick Jagger can become magic. Theyr first eponymous album was succesful and earned gold status in the United States. They are and were so succesful that today they have theyr own magazine which often ranks best songs of many genres and no one argues with them, because The Rolling Stones showed the world how everything should go.

No Beatles?
Also all of those bands are pretty easy to get into.
Look at Velvet Underground (the band that pretty much influenced all "out there" genres)

They got more radio friendly as they went on though.
"The Dark Side of Moon"

I like Wish You Were Here more.
She did have the rest of the Beatle's albums, but then our basement got flooded and most of the LPs got ruined.(yay for insurance) She gave the Beatles albums to her brother then later he said that he just rinsed them off and they work fine. He wouldn't give them up and my mom got pissed.
[editline]07:59AM[/editline]
I find it so annoying that the only song people praise by Led Zeppelin is Stairway to Heaven. God that song is so fucking overrated.
Agreed, it pisses me off because people ignore every other song they wrote because they're too busy orgasming over Stairway to Heaven.

I won't, because STH is truly legendary song. That's why LZ gets recognized for.
I like The Wall most out of Pink Floyd's albums. Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here have loads of weird sound scape noises, which I personally find a bit boring. The Wall and the song-y bits of Dark Side Of The Moon are incredible, though.
[editline]05:54PM[/editline]
Also thread needs more Genesis.
I bet people will disagree, but what about Guns n' Roses? AC/DC? Aerosmith?
