We recently reported on rumours that suggested veteran publisher Konami was abandoning AAA console development with the exception of its Pro Evolution Soccer series.
The report - published by French site Gameblog but seemingly verified by other sites who had done their own digging - was triggered by news that worldwide technology director Julien Merceron had left the company.
Merceron is the latest in a long list of talent which has parted ways with Konami in recent years, and on such evidence alone it would appear that the publisher is changing the way it operates within the gaming sphere. The lack of any big-name releases on the horizon also seems rather odd.
However, just like it did earlier in the year when similar rumours surfaced, Konami has publicly refuted these reports via one of its representatives:
I can promise you that we're definitely not leaving Metal Gear behind or anything like that. I know some blogs were claiming that online this morning, but I'm not really sure where they'd be getting that from.
We're still definitely working on console games and franchises such as Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania, PES and all the rest.
Konami is currently staffing-up for a new Metal Gear game - without the assistance of series creator Hideo Kojima, who is also believed to have left the company - but hasn't announced what kind of project it will be.
Join us in a few months when we'll no doubt be reporting on fresh rumours that Konami is turning its back on console games.
One could easily speculate as to how much weight the specific Konami representative's words carry, but given that the basis for the original rumor was merely conjecture, I'm willing to believe that we'll see many more AAA titles from Konami. The important question to ask is this: just how well these newer titles will turn out? And will Metal Gear stand any chance as a franchise without Kojima at the helm? Given Konami's recent track record, it's pretty safe to assume that things won't get much better, but given the success of MGS V, maybe the company's priorities will shift towards higher quality titles. Who knows?
Regardless, I find one of the most troubling trends found in this fiasco is the willingness to spread misinformation originating from internet sleuths looking for the truth.

I'm surprised anyone would even go make games for them after all the shit they put their devs through
Bring on Metal Gear Solid VI: Snake's Revenge!
MGSVI: The Pachinko Pain
i have always wanted a bad liquid snake game, and now might be the time
Bring on Metal Gear Solid VI: Snake's Revenge!
Metal Gear Solid VVI: Escape From New York
Why do they take so fucking long to address these allegations?
The important question to ask is this: just how well these newer titles will turn out?
Why ask? The answer is obvious.
no shit they would, their investors would flip shit out if they realized konami basically threw out all the money they spent on the fox engine
also people investing in konami, i'd imagine expect them to be a game-producer, not a pachinko machine manufacturer
unless they improve their employees' environment to not be like north korea, then it would've been a better idea to stop AAA production.
Why ask? The answer is obvious.
conversation's sake
Why do they take so fucking long to address these allegations?
because they don't care and this is a half ass half late attempt to for good pr
I wouldn't complain about superficial content patches/DLC for MGSV. Also, the Fox Engine needs to get some use. I'd prefer to see it licensed with documentation but that's not likely.
Why ask? The answer is obvious.
No it's not? What makes you think you're able to predict the future?
No it's not? What makes you think you're able to predict the future?
Do you honestly trust Konami at this point? Given their track record and all.
Do you honestly trust Konami at this point? Given their track record and all.
What does that have to do with it? I just don't pretend like I can see the future.
Besides, they have a long history of being competent at game development.

No, but that doesn't mean any game they publish will automagically be shit.
Shitty publishers sometimes publish decent games.

Yeah, sometimes.

now that they don't have Kojima I doubt it'll last long
would love to hear konami's definition of a AAA game
now that they don't have Kojima I doubt it'll last long
Sure, but there's no "obvious" outcome here. A lot of things can happen.

What's your definition of a AAA game?
People still have no idea what the fuck is going on with Konami/Kojima and it's getting to the point where we're actually believing rumours. Give it a year or two, see if they start making games again, see if they turn up at the next E3, but for now you're better off not feeding the media hype train and fueling the circlejerk hatred for Konami because of shit literally no one knows about or what a former, 'disgruntled' employee has came out and said.

You're very defensive there bud
You're very defensive there bud
I think you're misunderstanding this argument.
I think you're misunderstanding this argument.
Not much of an argument
Not much of an argument
Well, imagine "argument" is replaced with the more fitting word then.
What's your point?

I choose Discussion for 500
My point is
I hope the new Metal Gear game doesn't go to waste without Kojima, maybe a MG1 or 2 remake?

Yes but most work places that make games don't have some kind of dystopia 1984 thing going on where they spy on there workers, ( yes it's a thing ) and have people who are like graphic and game makers who WILl demoted to a janitor work if a game sells poorly, Even though konami have a track record for giving low resources for there workers as well as a lack of internet and poor marketing and this will also scare any new comers with great ideas bringing them in

game developing companies are infamous for mistreating their staff. i'm not defending the company, but i feel how they treat their staff is irrelevant when it comes to the quality of their future releases.
yeah and they dont have soldiers in crimea either right?
Konami
literally worse than putin
Bring Kojima back on board and do the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Directors Cut
