A 4-month-old infant in Maryland may be the first person to have had teeth form in his brain as a result of a specific type of rare brain tumor, according to a new report of the case. The boy is doing well now that his tumor has been removed, and doctors say the case sheds light on how these rare tumors develop. Doctors first suspected something might be wrong when the child's head appeared to be growing faster than is typical for children his age. A brain scan revealed a tumor containing structures that looked very similar to teeth normally found in the lower jaw. The child underwent brain surgeryto have the tumor removed, during which doctors found that the tumor contained several fully formed teeth, according to the report. [14 Oddest Medical Cases] After an analysis of tumor tissue, doctors determined the child had a craniopharyngioma, a rare brain tumor that can grow to be larger than a golf ball, but does not spread.
http://news.yahoo.com/babys-rare-brain-tumor-had-teeth-220748968.html
what the fuck
Thats extremely unsettling. But, its good that its nothing very bad and the boy is fine.
it's only time until:
That's so fucking wrong.
when I see this kind of shit all I can about is the limitless amount of things that can happen to the human body. It's pretty unnerving They were fully formed teeth too? Holy shit
The Human body can be really fucking weird sometimes...
Teratomas are creepy. They can also have hair or even limbs.
He should put it under his pillow for a shiny nickel.
Or make a hardcore apocalypse necklace
eww nsfw http://didyouknowarchive.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/teratome.jpg Nightmare fuel
The question of how that's even possible is going to gnaw at me for a while.
Teratomas are creepy. They can also have hair or even limbs.
aren't they normally on your tail bone?
I've seen some weird shit in my time, but teeth in a kid's brain beats pretty much everything I've ever observed in my time in the medical field. I'd give anything to have actually participated in a procedure like this, though. [editline]3rd March 2014[/editline]
aren't they normally on your tail bone?
Not necessarily. They have the potential to develop anywhere, but the spine and abdomino-pelvic region are indeed the most common sites you'll see such things.
Oh my, a teratoma. Not every day you see them.
The question of how that's even possible is going to gnaw at me for a while.
They're really interesting, if kind of weird. I can handle the fact they can have teeth in them, but you can also find hair, hands, feet, and virtually anything. It's strange.
Looks like SCP material tbh.
Wow what the hell.

Then she told me all of these stories of them getting removed and how they're almost like your body is trying to grow a twin as if you were in the womb still.

Can this be exploited to regrow teeth at their normal places?
Can this be exploited to regrow teeth at their normal places?
Truth be told? we can already grow most of everything that we need in a lab, and they recently invented a method that permits implantation of stem cells in your empty tooth socket (even though that's still going to take a long haul for full functionality), so I would say we wouldn't really need artificial teratomas to grow what we want.
You just know, that when a tumor is planning to bite you from the inside, it's a really bad tumor.
Teratomas are creepy. They can also have hair or even limbs.
That sounds terafying.
Reminds me of the time my dentist found a extra tooth lodged in my gum, fully formed and all.
I hope the operation isn't gonna leave him with brain damage or anything :(

It's painless, but the sudden dip (it looks and feels like a belly button near my ass) and fact it's got a weird black coloration is unsettling. It's also full of hair, which was readily discovered when the doctor inspecting it pulled out a strand that somehow managed to wriggle itself free. I can have it removed whenever, but when I do I'll make sure to have them save it so I can take pictures and post 'em here.
I hope the operation isn't gonna leave him with brain damage or anything :(
If neurology/neuropsychology has taught me anything, child brains are super malleable, though that boon quickly falls off. I'm not an expert, so don't take my word for it, but the child may develop some damage due to the pressure built inside. Much like any other tumor. It really depends where it develops and if its malign (capable of spreading without awareness). It looks like it developed near the temporal region and could affect visual processing and the like, but again, not an expert, just saying what could happen. Damage could happen, but it could be repaired so it has less of an impact later in life. It's amazing this kind of thing could develop in the brain, but hey, the human body is a strange place. When my son was born they had to measure his head size 3 times because they didn't believe it. He was in the 98th percentile for head size, and his head was "out of proportion" with the rest of his body. They were so surprised that they decided to do a CAT scan(I think) to make sure that nothing was wrong, and luckily nothing was. He's just my big head little boy :3 Needless to say we were relieved to find out there was no problem but it was still quite a scare. here he is as of a few minutes ago. [t]http://i.imgur.com/rtTQLi5.jpg[/t] my big head He's grown into it some and I think he'll continue to do so
