Well I recently got my hands on an old rig with and Athlon Xp 2200+ and 512 mb of ram, and I plan on bring up the ram to around a few gigs eventually.
My goals for it are to:
Host a minecraft server
Usenet downloading
Fileserver
Port forwarding
I personally would prefer ubuntu sever edition, because it simplifies debian quite a bit. I wanted to know if the server editions are as bloated as the desktop versions, which are becoming increasingly hard to run on older systems.
If Ubuntu server edition doesn't turn out well I'll probably throw Arch or just a straight debian install unless anyone has any better suggestions. I'd personally like the simplicity of ubuntu, but I am willing to try anything.
Red hat
cent
centos and set up ssh on there so you can access it remotely without going to it
CentOS.
Well I guess to start the download, 4 more gigs to go.
:10bux: says he comes asking how to install CentOS in a bit after he has managed to download and boot it up.
You pop in the dvd and you get a fancy little user interface with the install options.

Also I want my $10 need to buy a Pci Sata card.
CentOS. Seriously.

A little slow honey.
Well turns out the ancient board can't boot off a dvd. Now to download 7 cd's.
Why not try a USB boot?
If it's the board causing the issue, it probably won't even know that it's possible to boot an OS off of an USB flash drive.
Then again, I think you meant to say drive, not board and it's actually a CD-drive, in which case it's rather obvious why it didn't boot off of a DVD.
Perhaps a fresh, up-to-date BIOS flash could help things along..?
Just a thought. :3:
The board just doesn't support booting off dvds. Well now I'm back about to install, managed to set the fsb to 125mhz from 100 lmao.

Don't download the 7 CDs. Download the first one and setup a system with only the base package group. Then once the thing is connected to the internet download other software yourself.
I read up on it and found out you only need the first cd, so I am about to install and hopefully I plan to get Ssh, ftp, and usenet downloading done tonight.
