• Just got the 4S, some questions...

I just got my first smartphone, and I chose the iPhone 4S. When I first charge it with the stuff they give us, I plugged it into surge protector, and I plugged the stuff into my 4S. It charges when it's off, but when the 4S is on standby or anything, it doesn't charge. Anyone know why?
Have you tried plugging it in without the surge protector?
Have you tried plugging it in without the surge protector?
I'll try right now, just seems a little odd, since it charges when the phone is not on. EDIT: That's strange, when I plug it into the wall, the phone charges no problem, even when it's on.
proberly the usb port is low on power
proberly the usb port is low on power
I think that was the case, it works now, even when plugged into the surge protector. Thanks everyone.

One big tip which I found useful, get yourself a second cable. They can be bought from deal extreme for around $3-4. Keep one in your PC, and one in the wall socket charger. It's so much easier than hotswapping the cable all the time.

So I'm not so sure how the data plan works. We purchased the 2Gb Data Plan, but I've been mostly using my home Wi-Fi, and my school's Wi-Fi. On Friday, I'm going to be taking a 2 hour trip on a bus, and I'm wondering when I'm actually using that data. Such as this...I open up Safari, and I open up www.espn.com, after that, I press the home button, and I'm back at the "desktop." Though when I press Safari, it goes straight back to where I was. I also downloaded the Facebook and Twitter app. When I press the home button, and then go back to the app, it resumes from where it left off, same with Twitter. How much data is it using, and should I be wary of this?

The best way to check your data usage is to go to your carrier's website and log into your account. The iPhone itself also tracks data usage, but it may not be as accurate (This can be located in settings>general>usage and it'll be at the bottom

You can check your current data plan usage in: Settings > general > Usage > Mobile Usage Though I prefer to use this as it monitors your usage and divides it evenly amongst remaining days: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/data-usage-monitor/id481160166?mt=8 The reason Safari is on the page you left it is because you never closed it. it was still running in the background. The way to close it is to go to your home screen, double press the home button. The muti-task list will appear, hold over any icon until they begin to shake with a little red stop sign in the corner. Tap the stop sign to close the respective program. If an application is still running in the background it will show you by flashing a red banner at the top of your screen when you minimize it with the home button. Get in contact with your provider and ask them about your data package some providers don't charge you for over-usage, but instead just slow your speeds down to a crawl.
The red flashing thing actually only happens when an application is using the microphone and is in the process of recording, not just because it's running in the background.
The red flashing thing actually only happens when an application is using the microphone and is in the process of recording, not just because it's running in the background.
Oh, I remember reading somewhere it only happens when an app is running in the background. Probably wasn't an official source I read though.
All right, I think I'm good with this. I am more used to my iPhone now. Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help. Just some kinks I needed to work out, since this is my first smartphone after all. Though, what kind of cases do you guys recommend, my dad bought me an Otterbox Defender, but this thing is like a brick.

There's no way with an unjailbroken phone to remove apps from RAM manually.
You don't need to stop an app from running unless it's actually doing something. Most applications "sleep" in the background, where they don't do anything but are still stored in memory. This doesn't use any cpu or battery, but does allow the application to be opened faster and remember where it was when you left it
No, that just removes from the multitasking menu. There's no way with an unjailbroken phone to remove apps from RAM manually.
Removing apps from the multitasking bar actually unloads them from the RAM. I do think with Safari though it *might* just reload the same page you were viewing. It wouldn't 'resume' exactly, it would just create a new session and load the site you were looking at before.
No, that just removes from the multitasking menu. There's no way with an unjailbroken phone to remove apps from RAM manually.
Very untrue. If you run certain apps you can swap out of them with the home key, then select them from the home screen or multi-tasking bar, and they will resume exactly where you left off. If you close the app off in the multi-tasking bar, and then try loading it via the homes creen it's going to start from scratch. For the browser it just re-opens the previously sessions tabs automatically. Similar behaviour can be enabled in google chrome with the "Reopen the pages that were open last" option. Or in Firefox with the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" option.
Haha what a ripoff. You can get one from eBay for 99 cents shipped
Ripoff? How can you call a few dollars a ripoff? I was referring to the 1M cables, which now that I actually checked instead of trying to remember out of my head, are actually $1.82. That's not "ripoff", that's just slightly more higher priced, for a decently sized cabled that is suitable for using in the iPhone charger. If you want to see a real ripoff, try buying from Apple directly, $19 for a cable is pathetic.
