at least if they start putting in microtransactions the game will die a quick death instead of the slow, agonizing one that's been going on for a few years now

I don't think people are going to be leaving in droves because a microtransaction was added years after other microtransactions were already in the game.
Also this could be a step towards a hybrid model instead of just a subscriber one.
[editline]4th July 2013[/editline]
Also reminder that XP boosts have been sold out-of-game for years now as well. People panicking over this are overreacting imo.
I'm 70% sure it's just going to be for the asian markets.
The difference between this and the microtransactions that are already in the game is the current ones are purely cosmetic IIRC, whilst this actually offers an in-game advantage. Although technically you can already buy XP boosts by abusing the RaF function.
The reason I don't like this is because it's slowly opening the doors to selling gear itself, which I wouldn't mind so much if the game was moving away from the subscription model but considering they could probably get away with doing both, they probably will.
I see your point but I don't think the faster-leveling advantage necessarily detracts from anyone else's experience. Selling gear would be obvious line to cross; a major point of RPG's is to get gear to fight more challenging opponents. Faster leveling is more of a personal convenience feature.
I do agree though that I'd hope an expansion of the microtransaction system would lead to the subscription model being dropped as mandatory to play the game.

Holy shit.
youre running low on health. Do you want to buy a pack of health potions for 5 dollars?
guild of warscraft
I've been looking for someone to do RaF for ages.
so like Guild Wars, except you still pay an obnoxiously huge subscription fee? On top of the price of the game and expansions?

$15 isn't even that much.
Because a cash shop is exactly what WoW needed.
$15 isn't even that much.
it is if it's something stupidly minor like 3 maps
for 3 maps thats a HUGE amount of money. and yet, something tells me you'd support it.

pay to win is fucking stupid
To be fair. You can already buy pets/mounts from the blizzard store. So they are technically already doing 'Microtransactions' they just aren't throwing it all in your face. But yeah they will keep getting away with shit like this because of addicts.
Because a cash shop is exactly what WoW needed.
a cash shop wouldn't be bad if it funded the game enough to be 100% F2P like MapleStory (or at least pay once for game + pay for expansions because they already have those)
Didn't Blizzard say something in the line of NOT having microtransaction in the vein of XP boosts?
I think they want to kill WoW on purpose so they can put their full support behind Titan.

What are you even talking about lol. Do you know what thread you are in?
pay to win is fucking stupid
I agree so thanks for reinforcing my point I guess????
for what you get, it is
think about it, for 60 bux, you can get a game that has a very focused gameplay style, with a deep story, and a replayable multiplayer
or you can pay 90 bux or so for wow and the expansions, with the 15 a month fee and get the same content refurbished and recut to make you feel as though you're doing something new
I never implied $15 a mo for WoW was the best bang for your buck but it isn't nearly what I would call "obnoxious huge" either. Speaking from purely a financial standpoint, if $15 a month is too much for you to afford you probably shouldn't be worrying about video games anyway. As to value, obviously it's subjective. If someone plays 40 hours of WoW a month then I'd say $15 was pretty good fucking value, as opposed to games like Dishonored or Bioshock Infinite that have 10 hour average playtimes that you might play through again to get a different ending or try other choices/abilities. The main reason I'm not playing WoW right now is because I have no one to play it with so I'd probably quit in a week, rendering the $15 charge a waste. That said, when I was playing WoW with my guild, doing PVE content, random battlegrounds, arenas, and even a bit of world PVP towards the end of Wrath I probably saved money because I was spending my video game time on WoW for $15 a month as opposed to buying full $60 titles. But that's me personally.
I think they want to kill WoW on purpose so they can put their full support behind Titan.
It's funny because unless they shut down the game directly they probably won't be able to kill WoW either way, it's just too big.
I think they want to kill WoW on purpose so they can put their full support behind Titan.
What I don't understand is why people think this spells the end of WoW when A) A precedent was already set for microtransactions and XP boosts you buy with real money, and B) fucking 8 million people play the game.
Didn't Blizzard say something in the line of NOT having microtransaction in the vein of XP boosts?
I don't think they have ever been so specific but they did say before microtransactions were added that they likely wouldn't use them. And then they added the pet store and purchasable mounts. They weren't lying, it's just that business models changed, and around that time there was a large shift away from the $15 a month MMO to the F2P/buy-once model.
Reading this thread made this video pop into my head

Why don't they just do something like the Auction House where players can sell stuff for real world money and they just take a small cut or something? Kind of like the Steam Community Market.
The assumption that hours = value is made with the obvious caveat that the person playing for those hours is actually enjoying themselves. If you don't like WoW then obviously the entertainment appeal doesn't matter to begin with. That 40 hour figure was actually about where I would be in a "slow" month (aka several months after the recent content patch) where the vast bulk of my time ingame would be spent doing PVE or PVP with friends, which was enjoyable enough until they all quit.
When you consider the people who play even more hardcore (up to 40 hours a week) that actually enjoy doing solo stuff, you can see why that $15 a month fee might look more attractive over the course of a few months then just dropping it on a new AAA singleplayer title that lasts 6-8 hours, even if you get the same amount of fun out of it, however you quantify "fun" as.

ya they have a whole different pricing structure over there anyway, south korean law won't let them sell game cards at 30-60 day intervuls, it has to be by the hour, so they are gonna make it up somewhere, also mini-pets are damn cute
This is all data mined info. There are a lot of stuff that is either region exclusive or never makes it live.
My gut says that this is for the Asian Markets due to having a different pay style, similar to the lockout situation they did over there.
SuckMyLich: How much is a Nether Ray mount?
Tollo: Four Lich King Tokens
As long as it's only cosmetic stuff I see no problem with it. Maybe Warriors will finally be able to buy boots and a belt to match their Heroic T10 set.
Hopefully this at least leads to a buy2play policy. Hopefully its purely for cosmetic or collection reasons.
