RoboCop Statue On Its Way To Detroit As Details Of City's Cash Crisis Emerge

Phew. Not a moment too soon, RoboCop is on his way to Detroit.
The 10-foot-tall cyborg enforcer (a statue, not the real deal) was born out of a 2011 crowdfunding campaign that went viral and raised over $60,000. Apparently, thousands of people wanted to see the lead of 1987 science fiction movie "RoboCop" resurrected and returned to the city he was built to save. In the film, RoboCop becomes the hero of the Detroit of the future, which is plagued with extreme crime and violence.
The project has attracted its share of naysayers -- some thought it was a trivial, or disrespectful project, given Detroit's actual struggles with real financial and crime problems. Others became impatient when RoboCop didn't appear on the scene immediately. With the help of Across the Board Creations in Canada, a statue has been created out of foam, wax, clay, and steel.
The statue is on its way to Detroit, where it will be cast and manufactured in bronze by Venus Bronze Works.
He couldn't have come at a more fortuitous -- or depressing -- time. Detroit's newly-appointed emergency manager released a report Sunday that detailed just how financially unstable the city is. According to the report, Detroit is $162 million in the red. "Detroit spends more than it takes in — it is clearly insolvent on a cash flow basis," Orr states.
Hiring a new chief and restructuring the inefficient and struggling police department are even key measures outlined in the report.
But while the mood around the Motor City Monday is grim, and a statue certainly won't be helping cash flow, we can't help but be curious about when this zany project will find solid ground -- literally. As of now, RoboCop's home is still up in the air, as organizers search for a location where it will be "invited in, easily visitable, insured, maintained and secure."

Detroit has its priorities.

Well, perhaps they don't have anything else to build.
No fucking way, I never thought that this would happen.
Detroit needs a hero, Detroit needs RoboCop.
Inappropriate or not - it's a badass statue.
It would be bad ass it the statue moved and spouted out movie quotes.

Considering Detroit's cash problems, it'd better be 'I'd buy that for a dollar!'
such a stupid waste of money
I hope nobody steals it.

I dont think its a big deal if a bunch of people contributed money for something.

A lot of the money is being spent on bronze work here in Detroit, so it's bringing a little bit into the city.
I honestly think...
...this is really fucking stupid.
Oh the joys of being a Michigander.
The joys being I get to laugh at my own state for being so goddamn stupid.
Personally, I think this is fucking awesome. Although a real life RoboCop for Detriot would be better.
I really don't have much of a problem with this, it was funded by private donations so it's not going to hurt any, and it's highly doubtful that money would'ave gone to something more useful anyway. That being said I think this money would've been much better spent on building cyborgs out of recently deceased police officers, but again: what are the odds of that actually happening? If nothing else it's somewhat uplifting.
Hey guys, what's going on in this thread?

Well if it's so stupid, I'll take it.
It will make a nice trophy for our next college football victory against you chumps.

Eh, go figure, the Police were facing cutbacks in RoboCop 2 too.
Wait I thought Robocop was a documentary.
...Put it outside the police station? Come on, that's where any Robocop statue should be. That way any riff raff they drag in has to be hauled in past the steely eyed gaze of Detroit's finest man-machine. It should be placed beside a dedicated criminal intake doorway and rigged up with a soundbyte, so every time someone's dragged past it says
COME QUIETLY OR THERE WILL BE... TROUBLE.

serving the public trust, protecting the innocent and upholding the law apparently aren't part of those

Certainly not this fucking bullshit.

I'll throw in $10 for that.
Looks like C-3PO. To be honest, i think irony will strike and someone will steal the statue to sell it as raw materials (since copper is worth quite some money these days).
