Ever since I saw How television ruined your life, I think that what Charlie Brooker said are pretty true. Look at television today. Its gotten so shit(in my opinion) that I simply stop watching any form of reality television shows or dramas, except for documentaries and historical shows. Television started out as a way to present news in a different manner, but look at where it has led us to. We have dumb shows like Jeresy shore, and all sorts of shit, which are in fact meaningless. It just shows people doing everyday stuff actually. Same goes for how it has shaped celebrities, I hate how they give so much shit about what they wear, how they brush their teeth, what food are they eating. Yeah, I know they aren't the majority of the television shows today, but still, compared to the past, we had more practical and useful shows.
Good, i can watch NFL all day on sunday.
All TV runs is stupid, frivolous shit that lowers my IQ.
The internet is completely different. Every site is enlightening and stimulates my brain.
Television, in most cases (if not all) will mostly do harm to people watching and listening.
It's a problem of what is shown, who shows it and how it's set up. You see, there's lots of variables and standards that shows have to conform to; 1 hour or 30 minutes, their host (CBC, Discovery, FOX, etc), budget, advertisements, audience, etc. All of those variables modifies the content of the presented TV program, transforming the show entirely to follow TV standards: deliver pre-made ideas, stereotypes and such in order to keep your audience, thus keeping your show alive.
Your all thinking of it in a way that is relative to you. In reality, television is a necessity in order to occupy the masses. Think about it, how many people watch TV? If TV didn't exist, the world would be too boring. All we would have is the internet, which you can't quite watch in the morning, and most people don't know how to use correctly. Plus, regularly scheduled programming is easier to access. The point is, without TV, god knows what would happen. Riots, with people holding picket signs that say "We're bored as HELL!"

And your also a gold member on Facepunch. Your not one of the people who don't know how to use it correctly/fail at life.
It's about as "harmful" as any other form of media. Books, internet, whatever.
They're not inherently harmful or good on their own.

Which would be the best thing ever.
the only things i watch on TV are BBC news, some football and movies. the majority of the time, i have it on for backround noise more than anything. thing's like big brother, jersey shore, x factor etc are just nonsensical bullshit that do nothing but dumb down television for the masses. I would rather watch something like 'the blue planet' anyday of the week over that trash. but unfortunately, media companies know that a program about vain, egotistical, narcissistic arseholes will make them much more money than something genuinely interesting.
Ahaha, we talked about this in school today, and you are attacking it at the wrong angle. It's not whether if TV is good or bad, but what we do when we are bored.
You can't say TV is bad, because if I go on a scientific channel I can learn something.
But you can't say it's good either because of so many ignorant and downright misinforming moments.
So perhaps the question shouldn't be "Does it more good or bad." but more something like "What should we do when bored instead watching television."
