I don't recall the first reboot making so much waves? Since when is shooting Nazis controversial? They've always been classic video game cannon fodder next to zombies and aliens.

This. Since when did anti-nazi stances in media provoke political discussion?

I suppose it never did
Bethesda, publisher of the upcoming shooting game Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, has issued a formal response to decidedly informal (and largely anonymous) criticisms surrounding the anti-Nazi game. In doing so, however, the company has made the curious decision to try to absolve itself of particularly political overtones
It's just marketing/PR stuff.

There's no actual controversy, just Pete Hines stirring shit for attention.
Really shows you who hasn't played many games before.
Wolfensteins main enemy has always been nazis.
I like how it is specifically mentioned as a "anti-nazi" game as opposed as a "pro-nazi" game.
I just hope like hell it lives up to hype. I'm willing to accept Wolfenstein as being the next best long-form singleplayer game now that the other one is gone.
i hope theres mummies or something weird like that in this one
After EA staged that fake protest against Dante's Inferno, it doesn't seem that crazy to think this "controversy" is just a PR stunt.
Imagine being offended by microwaving, shotgunning, burning and axeing Nazis
lol

It's due to the reactions they are getting from this tweet. Per the article;
The game's latest advertising campaign, which launched this week, appropriates President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan by using the tagline "Make America Nazi-Free Again." This message could be read one of two ways: as an isolated reference to the game's conceit, which makes players battle through an alternate-universe United States overrun by Nazis; or as a pointed comment about high-profile neo-Nazi demonstrations in the USA over the past few months.
The campaign, unsurprisingly, was followed by vitriolic comments from unconfirmed social media accounts. It's a tactic that shouldn't shock anybody who has followed recent, fascinating studies about Russian campaigns of disinformation and political-bubble exploitation that rely on similar social media actions. One of the most visible anonymous complaints directed at Bethesda, carried by "WTF really" retweets, described the ad campaign as an attempt to "tap into hysterical leftist power fantasy." (To clarify: these anti-Wolfenstein posts do not appear to have a clear connection to Russian disinformation campaigns.)
man i just want an excuse to kill bad guys :frown:
That line is actually pretty clever and I can imagine it actually pissing off both sides.
Looking at preview footage for the game (which I am totally going to get) this really seems like Bethesda covering their asses. There is quite a bit of idle dialog shown that seems like it's ment to either cause discussion or at the very least have the player reflect.
the fact that its making anyone mad is pretty funny to say the least, assuming they're like, /actually/ bothered lmao

its not even like its a distasteful shitpost, or blatantly false advertising and making people mad that way
