Just started this today, figured I've been putting it off for long enough.

Breastplate partially formed here, the Backplate is still as cut from the CNC machine.
Below is a picture of what the armour will look like.

And a picture of a 'Buff Coat', a leather coat made of extremely heavy weight leather, I already have this patterned, I just need the leather now. My Buff Coat will be made without sleeves since I would require more flexibility in my arms to load and fire my Musket.

Also a picture of some of the other stuff I will be making and adding to this thread as I go. The sword is already started, I just need to take a picture of the blade though the finished product will be less 'modern' than the one in the picture.

This will be a companion set for both of my Matchlock muskets.

YES! OH GOD YES!
another RR_Raptor thread!
Can not wait!
This looks like it will look absolutely stunning when completed! I've got a teacher who does similar projects as you, he came to school on halloween with a full on homemade conquistador costume! the armor pieces are and helmet are very similar to your designs. he even made a crossbow. It looked fantastic.
I like olden days gunmen costumes
can't wait for the finished product
In the last picture, are those blue things attached to the leather piece supposed to hold ammunition or something? what are they for?
Awesome duder, keep it up !

Same here man, old stuff just had STYLE .
I remember when I was a young kid in school, we were learning about the English civil war and my friends parents were re-enactors and they came in all dressed up , one was a Parlimentarian (Roundhead) with the breastplate and stuff, looked awesome. and the other was a Royalist with a hat with a feather , and kinda looking like a 17th century pimp.

Yeah, they held powder for reloading the musket methinks
Wouldn't the powder horn lookin thing pictured hold powder, not the blue things? unless that's just extra?

Yeap definately
Even badass Jack Churchill said "any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed."

and he served in WWII
Yeah, you'd think it would be for powder, (which I think is right) because that way he could have exactly enough powder in each thing instead of possibly overfilling it using a big pouch funnel thing.
Wouldn't the powder horn lookin thing pictured hold powder, not the blue things? unless that's just extra?
Ah, Didn't see the Horn . I guess that had the powder in it and the blue pouches had the shot ?
:iiam:
We will wait for RR_Raptor to hopefully enlighten us.

Aha, I read about a similiar thing were a commander had some bagpipe player follow him onto the beach, I read that the germans defending the beach had their guns trained on them but didn't fire because they thought that the British bloke striding up a beach with a musical instrument was mental, and apparently it was taboo and considered to give you bad luck if you hurt a mental person :3:
I first read that as American Civil War and was very confused, but now I get it. This will kick your khukri thread out of the water.
The blue things are called Apostles, they hold premeasured powder for the main charge. Horn or Flask is used specifically for priming the pan, never for the main charge. Each apostle carries enough powder for one shot.
The reason for this is if an apostle accidentally ignites from an ember in the barrel it's just a flash and doesn't burn you. It's happened to me once, it was surprising and very hot but I wasn't burned, just very black.
On the other hand, if the priming Flask went up it becomes a very unfriendly hand grenade that can take off your hand.
However, when loading with paper cartridges about 5 grains (Grains as in the measurement of volume for gunpowder) from the cartridge is used for priming the pan first then the rest is poured down the barrel. I've been using paper cartridges the most since I haven't made an apostle bandolier yet and I still have a couple dozen .75 cal paper cartridges and about a dozen 25mm cartridges. Gunpowder tastes sour and gives me heartburn by the way.
The apostles are made of wood though, I already have enough to build about 16 apostles.
And an update:

And that sword I mentioned:

Informative or winner, informative or winner! Which one?!
This looks so cool! I just want you to take pictures of EVERYTHING you've ever worked on, are working on now, and are going to work on. I love your threads too much.
Some more, added the central ridge for the breastplate and started forming the backplate:

Managed to flare the backplate and holy dumb fuck that was a bitch, took all day. The breastplate is more or less circular in cross section, but the backplate has a more rectangular shape in cross section. Flaring the bottom edges expands the metal outward but steel HATES that and tries to bend instead.
If I had finished my armour forge first then I could have used heat, but I haven't finished it because I still need to material to make the framework for it so everything I'm doing here is with cold steel.

As for the breastplate, I went and rolled the edges around the collar and arm openings to make it more comfortable to wear. This also stiffens it further.

The backplate will be getting this same treatment soon, then they both need to be planished to remove all the bumps from the forming process.
Then the extra fittings need to be made, this includes a belt with a hand made buckle, two belt hooks to keep the belt from riding up the waist, two shoulder straps with armour plates to prevent the straps from being cut in combat and two terminal pieces for fastening the straps down to the breastplate, two lugs which the straps slip over and two hooks to prevent the straps from slipping off the lugs.
However, I may brown the armour. This would be done before final assembly and turn the armour a deep brown color.
I just need to experiment a bit and find a decent way of doing it, I'm not too fond of the idea of pissing on it until it turns brown. The neighbors think I'm strange enough as is.
That...is amazing.
Why would you brown it?
I think it looks awesome silver/gray!
What would it look like browned?
By the way fucking awesome job there. Can't wait for the finished result.
Ooh that looks pretty cool actually! Are you for sure going to brown it?
If you ever decide to invade a small town with all the cool shit you made feel free to contact me, I'd love to follow you into battle. Take shelter in that igloo you made a while back, too
Finished planishing one side, thought I'd post a comparison picture.

Pretty significant difference as you can see.
Planishing and is now completely done.

I think I created the first laser guided planishing stake too. The laser points to the center of the sledgehammer head I used to planish the armour so I know exactly where the center is when I put the armour on top to begin hammering.

It's beautiful to say the least. now on to the rest of the clothing?
Only thing I can see is it seems like the ridge on the front is not very prominent, which is sad because I feel it's one of the cooler parts of the armor piece.
Yeah, I may go back and try to push it out some more but it's difficult because the armour is very hard now from the planishing process, I can sit on it and it'll squish out, then when I get up again it springs back into shape.
Well done nice work.
