There is a big, juicy piece in The Hollywood Reporter today about the push-and-pull between Legendary and Universal/Comcast . A lot of it has to do with the whole “Skull Island goes to Warner Bros./Time Warner TWX ”thing with a little bit of bad blood concerning Legendary’s Thomas Tull perhaps taking too much credit for mega-hits like The Dark Knight and Jurassic World over the years. I will admit that I am a little disheartened to hear that Universal wasn’t thrilled about a film as expensive as Crimson Peak going out as an R, but that may be for another day if I get a chance to discuss their still worthwhile slate of theatrical horror films this year. The big geek news concerns the now uncertain fate of Pacific Rim 2. The film was slotted for August 4, 2017, before it was pulled off the schedule a week or so ago. At this moment, its future is up in the air — it may never actually happen. In other words, it may suffer the fate of Walt Disney’s Tron 3. And if that happens it will be, I would argue, for the same general reasons.
As much as some of us love Pacific Rim (and that I didn’t care for it doesn’t mean I don’t admire what it does right and respect the fellow critics/nerds who love it), the Guillermo del Toro movie wasn’t a smash hit in 2013. At a cost of $190 million, the Warner Bros. release earned just $101 million in America and only avoided flop status due to strong business in China, where the film grossed $111 million and pushed the worldwide total to $411 million. A sequel was seemingly green-lit last year, this time for Universal since Warner Bros. and Legendary mostly parted ways. That was in June of 2014, where Universal was working its way through a robustly successful 2014 that lacked a single conventional tent pole. For a studio that perhaps wanted an extra franchise to impress the stockholders, a Pacific Rim sequel made, well, “sense” is too strong a word, but it wasn’t a terrible idea if costs could be contained or if a movie star could be procured.
A $160 million Pacific Rim 2 starring Vin Diesel is a better bet than a $190m Pacific Rim starring Charlie Hunnam. But then 2015 happened. Universal had a stunningly solid year with franchises like Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect 2, Fifty Shades of Grey, Minions, and Furious 7 earning record domestic and worldwide grosses for the studio. And with next year offering dicier propositions like WarCraft, The Huntsman, and yet another Bourne movie (and Universal is almost sure to get hit with “slump” headlines as a result of 2016 not measuring up to 2015), maybe Pacific Rim 2 isn’t a chance that Universal feels like taking right now. Obviously if Crimson Peak, the Tom Hiddleston-Jessica Chastain haunted house thriller, hits it big, the situation may change. But for the moment, like Disney when they pulled the plug on Tron 3, Universal is in a rare position of having too many franchises to juggle, to the point where they really don’t want to take a chance on an expensive and risky proposition.
Basically, tl;dr: Legendary/Warner Brothers don't want to deal with the possibility of Pacific Rim 2 flopping financially, and would rather go to making the upcoming King Kong film which may be part of a series.
Was there really any reason to make a second one? Plot wise I mean

Guillermo can't catch a fucking break
King Kong? Are you fucking kidding me?
They don't want to take risks so they just want to stick to remakes eh, fucking hollywood. It's only a matter of time until they run out of ideas.
I love Guillermo del Toros movies.
Statistically speaking, the second sequel to a majorly successful blockbuster does better than the first one.
What the fuck
screw the plot, i want giant robots
And Ron Pearlman.

I think the real issue is that they may plan on doing a "Kongverse" which is basically jumping on the already hole-filled and rapidly sinking ship that is cinematic universes.
That, and that they're like "Well haha, let's try and make a new King Kong vs Godzilla! I mean, it's not like it'd basically be a 35' tall Gorilla vs a 330+' tall Lizard!"

That's how I felt about this news too, it must be absolutely heartbreaking for the poor guy
So they'd rather lose money over a long period of time rather than sustain themselves?
Can we at least get the anime?
screw the plot, i want giant robots
This is the reason the first movie was mediocre.
This is the reason the first movie was mediocre.
Depends. It's a specific type of movie. I (and with me many others) didn't give a fuck the plot was mediocre. GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT ALIENS FUCK YEAH
And people wonder why three of the last five movies I watched in a theatre were the Lord of the Rings trilogy on their original runs. (And I've watched maybe 10 Hollywood movies at home since the last theatre visit.)
Hollywood's just eating itself with remakes now.

I honestly was not expecting much when I watched it with my friend, however as soon as giant robot fists started flying I fucking loved the movie!
Was there really any reason to make a second one? Plot wise I mean
no
First he loses Silent Hills now he loses Pacific Rim 2? Damn I fucking feel bad for Guillermo.

That's literally the only reason you NEED to see a movie like that, to be honest.
Sheesh, people see a movie where emphasis is put on giant-ass robots beating up giant-ass inter-dimensional monsters and they fucking expect it to be the next Citizen Kane.

A sequel is technically not an original idea either.
And Ron Pearlman.
Didn't he [sp]get eaten[/sp]?
Honestly the biggest problem the first one had was that it took too long for the characters to get back to fighting monsters in giant robots.
Well there needs to be some form of plot that keeps things tied together and puts forward reasons for things to happen, and the plot of Pacific Rim was wrapped up pretty neat with a lil' happy ending bow.

[sp]After the credits, he slices out of the baby kaiju and says "Where is my goddamn shoe!?", probably as a joke to lead up to a 2nd film[/sp]
I just want that HBO version of Monster and I will be happy.

Oh. Guess I didn't stay through the credits.

Well it's not the Marvel style where it's after a few of the major names get put on screen that it has the ACS, instead it is allllll the way at the end, so it's probably easy to miss.

Marvel does a lot of those, too. (the ones that are at the very end of the credits)
nononononononononono
don't
pls
Pacific Rim 2 needs to be a thing, more robots beating the shit out of aliens needs to happen.

Ever time one of Del Toro's projects is cancelled I'm secretly happy, because it might mean he's one step closer to making live action Monster happen.
I for one am happy about this, more room for At The Mountains of Madness or Hellboy 3.
A sequel would be perfect, even if they managed to shoehorn some reason they'd be up against kaijus again through techno/psycho-babble, it could work out very well because Pacific Rim isn't some super serious movie with some directer/writers that have their heads up their asses over making it a super serious film, but it's a fun film with so much creativity and effort involved. It's got perfect amounts of action, comedy, some serious parts that aren't over-the-top (which are just fine with the way the film is), but fit well with the atmosphere and plot of the film. It's a perfectly fine film! If he just sticks with that, he'll make bank and add to the Pacific Rim universe a very good installment.
I really, truly hope he doesn't focus on anything else, and puts his all into a PR sequel. We already love him, and he shouldn't have to worry about cancelling this and that left and right, because it'll just look like his career is going down the drain, as unbelievable as that may sound with his track record of great films. I wish him the best, truly.
Guillermo can't catch a fucking break
Its a real shame.
While The Strain isnt exactly 10/10(largely del toros work on it) hes still someone with good vision. I really thought he was perfect for Silent Hills considering he was working with other game devs.
Hes like someone whos great but needs someone else with him. I just want more Del Toro but all his projects have been fucked in the ass recently which is a huge shame. I mean if The Strain does one thing right its solid camera, and work set design, two things that would help and Silent Hills game because all past 4 have fucked themselves in those 2 regards.

Same, and the fact that he is working with Kurosawa means it won't be shit.
