• Confusion of a once-thought Atheist.

So i'm not religious or anything, I don't believe in God and have considered myself an Atheist for a while now, but now thinking about it, I do believe in the paranormal, whilst some would consider that to believe in something religious as without some form of religion, people wouldn't believe in life after death. Now this is where I am confused, am I still an atheist for not believing there is a higher being or something else because I believe in ghosts? Is that contradicting for an Atheist, to believe that we could live in on some form or another, but believe that there is no higher being? Is there a term for this?
Yea the term is Atheist.
I consider myself agnositc, in a sense that I do not know what happens after we die and we have no way to prove either side. I don't believe in any religion but I do think that untill everything in the world is proven by science then we cannot be 100% certain that death is the end. I don't know if that's the same thing though. My dad is an atheist and not usually superstitious at all, but he believes his father's house was haunted by the stuff he and his family saw there. Personally I am sceptical because I had not seen it myself, but eh what do I know. Hahaha everyone who isn't "lolololol god is totalley faek!" gets dumbs? *expects more*
Atheism is something that has no definition. Every one is different.
If you're a pure free thinker, you don't believe in anything related to god, spirits, satan, fairytale, ghosts and magic. [editline]11:44PM[/editline] In other words, you don't believe in the supernatural forces

I'd say i'm open minded towards life after death but I don't believe it is something painted so nicely such as heaven.
Wait, so you don't believe in god, but instead you believe in ghosts. LOLLLLLLLLLLLL
All religions are 100% sure that their theory for the afterlife are right. BUT THEY'RE ALL DIFFERENT.
Wait, so you don't believe in god, but instead you believe in ghosts. LOLLLLLLLLLLLL
you hit the nail on the head there
I don't think "science" is 100% certain about that death is the end.
Why did you put it in quotes? I never said that it was, I just couldn't think of a better word to explain what I meant. If everything in the world is proven to be caused by a human, animal or natural cause then I probably would doubt the existance of any form of afterlife. But there are some mysterious things in the world still, and they are yet to be explained so it cannot be ruled out.
Believing in ghosts doesn't mean you're a theist, it means you're an idiot.
Science actually is sure that death is the end. Think about it - it's obvious that after the death of anythings brain, it stops existing/living. I am agnostic tho. I'm really not sure what to think anymore.

The only requirement of being an atheist is the lack of a belief in any god. If, in addition to this, you don't believe in: unicorns, ghosts etc, then great, but it's not a requirement. Out of interest, why do you believe ghosts exist?

if there were ghosts then ghostbusters wouldn't be a film
Do not ask about this on Facepunch. Facepunch is even worse philosopher than doctor. [editline]03:11PM[/editline]
if there were ghosts then ghostbusters wouldn't be a film
So I guess that because there is "Cars" movie from Pixar, I just run on highway really fast. :downs:
I'm like you OP. I believe in an afterlife but I don't have a religion. So I just call myself atheist. Cuz that's what I am.

My Great Grandmother died a few years back and my mum and dad had split up, I had a dream a few weeks after she died and it was a dream where it was me, my mum, my dad, my sister and my great grandmother sitting in my grandfathers living room. There was a feeling about it, that everything was going to be okay and in the dream my mum and dad were back together, then unbeknown to me during this time my mum and dad had been working things out and were on the verge of getting back together and a few weeks after the dream they got back together. I believe that was my great grandmother coming to tell me that everything would be fine again. Also my dad had a very weird experience, he and his grandfather had talked about life after death when he was young and that if it really existed he would try and contact him when he died, well he passed away over 10 years ago now, and about a year ago my dad was sitting in a Services cafe (rest stop in the UK) because he's a foreman for building BP garages around the country. He was sitting in the morning before work and a man dressed in what can only be described as a Leiderhosen outfit came over to his table and said "I believe this is for you" and handed him a postcard with lots of scribbling and random writings all over it, the weirdly dressed man just gave it him then walked out of the cafe. On the postcard was the handwriting of his Grandfather and dates and writings only them two would know, it listed birthdays including my dads and sayings only his grandfather had said. The weirdest thing was that my dad got this overwhelming feeling to ring his aunty to tell her. "Your dad is going to be looking over you, you're going to be alright", unbeknown to him his aunty was having an operation that day that nobody knew about.
Wait, so you don't believe in god, but instead you believe in ghosts. LOLLLLLLLLLLLL
As one of my friends once explained to me, humans have strong eletrical energies in their bodies. Since energy doesn't simply "vanish" when you die, it's logical that that energy could still "float" (for lack of a better word) around, and we would visualize them as ghosts.

And anecdotal evidence is not evidence.
maybe, but read the second one.
Wait, so you don't believe in god, but instead you believe in ghosts. LOLLLLLLLLLLLL
yeah that's stupid, you believe in stuff that could feasibly happen and has been widely witnessed by many reliable people, and not some floating creator of all things who is the ultimate power with the somewhat sketchy bible as the only proof! :downs:
I believe the term you're searching for is Agnostic.
I'm not saying this is why people should believe in ghosts, but my dad was a skeptic before this and is an English Builder since he was 16, he's not the kind to bullshit like that because he's rational, i've seen the postcard, this is partly the reason I believe in ghosts or life after death.

The only criteria you need to be an atheist is not to believe in a god, but saying "I don't believe in a god" is not the same as saying "there are no gods." Just wanted to clarify that. Also most of the people in this thread have no idea what they're talking about.
I think your just an atheist. I'm an atheist and personally - I want nothing to do with religion or gods because frankly I think that they are all just bullshit excuses to do something or other.
