WASHINGTON - A U.S. Marine who went into the sea from a V-22 Osprey during a flight mishap over the northern Gulf this week was the first American killed in U.S. military operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. Corporal Jordan Spears, 21, of Memphis, Indiana, was a crewman aboard a V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft flying off the USS Makin Island and went into the sea when the aircraft lost power shortly after takeoff, the Navy said on Friday. The V-22 descended to the surface of the ocean during the mishap on Wednesday. Spears and a second air crewmen went into the water when it appeared the tilt-rotor aircraft was about to crash, but the two pilots were able to regain control of the craft and landed it safely back on board the Makin Island. One air crewman was recovered and was in stable condition aboard the Makin Island. A search and rescue operation for the missing crewman was called off on Thursday.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-marine-death-islamic-state-20141003-story.html
so he died because the aircraft lost power shortly after takeoff i thought a member of isis actually killed someone
We live in one hell of a time. So far only one recorded person in our massive national military has lost their life in a massive international war, making headlines, and the person didn't even die at the hands of the enemy. Tragic, but at the same time it's a sign of how incredibly fortunate we are.
Stupid headline.
Just sounds like an aircraft malfunction and he hit the sea, not death at the hands of an ISIS militant
The Osprey strikes again.
In Capitalist US, Osprey preys on you.
Good old Osprey problems.
"Yeah, well I'd be pissed too if I had to search and rescue your sorry ass."
V-22, not surprised
Can't believe they're still flying these fucking things. Wikipedia lists 36+ fatalities and 7 hull losses, that's a pretty awful track record considering we've made less than 300.
He was not killed, it was an accident. You can barely say it was a casualty of war, imo.

He wouldn't have lost his life if this fight wasn't happening.
Except it is a casualty of war? The osprey was doing missions in operations against the ISIS and it happened to result in the death of a soldier. Pretty simple.
Question that hasn't been asked yet: What the hell are Osprey's doing going to Iraq/Syria? Isn't this an air war right now?
Question that hasn't been asked yet: What the hell are Osprey's doing going to Iraq/Syria? Isn't this an air war right now?
Could be just doing help to assist iraqi/kurds but why a osprey? If that's the case
My brother is in the marines. He says Ospreys have killed more marine than they have terrorists
Question that hasn't been asked yet: What the hell are Osprey's doing going to Iraq/Syria? Isn't this an air war right now?
It's incredibly ignorant to believe that you can launch a successful air campaign without anyone on the ground to recon/direct strikes. There's no doubt that SOF guys and forward-air controllers are on the ground in small teams.
even if it was going to crash, wouldnt it have been better for them to stay inside? also they are probably using the ospreys for transporting supplies to the kurds
even if it was going to crash, wouldnt it have been better for them to stay inside? also they are probably using the ospreys for transporting supplies to the kurds
Jumping out early would've saved them the struggle of trying to escape underwater.

It's a couple of ships sending even fewer planes out to drop a couple bombs. I would be seriously surprised if we lost a lot of people doing a whole lot of nothing except a handful of airstrikes. It's not a sign at all other than you grossly overestimating the extent of US participation against ISIS. [editline]3rd October 2014[/editline]
He was not killed, it was an accident. You can barely say it was a casualty of war, imo.
Majority of US casualties in the Spanish-American War died from disease, much of which before even their first battle yet they are considered casualties because despite not going against the enemy, they were still combatants in arms against them.

But whatever.
I would assume with all the technology they have they wouldn't necessarily have to place people in harms way. But whatever.
I wasn't aware we had robot soldiers to go out and fight instead of people.
This was one of my marines when we were stationed down in Pensacola. I've lost more to accidents than to combat. Sadly, that is not uncommon. He was a damn good kid too.

First casualty in the American Civil War was from a misfiring cannon during the 21-Gun salute at the peaceful surrender of Fort Sumter.

Can we please stop using the fucking osprey
My brother is in the marines.
My brother is in the marines. He says Ospreys have killed more marine than they have terrorists
Probably true of most unarmed aircraft. edit: nvm some have machine guns on the loading ramps, and a few have belly turrets that have never been used in combat because it's almost always escorted by helicopter gunships.
