(I know that's a gorilla, just ignore it.)
Almost two million years after their last meals, two members of a prehuman species in southern Africa left traces in their teeth of what they had eaten then, as well as over a lifetime of foraging. Scientists were surprised to find that these hominins apparently lived almost exclusively on a diet of leaves, fruits, wood and bark.
people still eat bark
just the fucked up insane people who live in the jungle and are raised by gorillas
[sp]THIS IS A TARZAN REFERENCE[/SP]
This ain't news
Makes sense. Bark is plentiful and would probably fill you up quickly. Won't do shit for you, though.
No fiber?
That sounds ruff.
Won't do shit for you, though.
Lots of fiber. :v:
Lots of fiber. :v:
And insects, good protein.
exclusively on a diet of leaves, fruits, wood and bark.
PeTA already claims that we were naturally meant not to eat meat. They'll have a field day with this.
Silly billies, they're talking about this bark!

All of us like to eat this!

There's really no such thing as a pure herbivore though. Even Cows and Goats will occasionally supplement their diet with meat from carrion when given the opportunity.
And I think we all know what Chimpanzees are like...

Insane? Or just following tradition?
PeTA already claims that we were naturally meant not to eat meat. They'll have a field day with this.
But meat has a few things we need that aren't in the vegetarian.
Think the researchers are barking up the wrong tree.
Certain types of bark are used for asprin. It wouldn't surprise me if they did this to cure headaches.
PeTA already claims that we were naturally meant not to eat meat. They'll have a field day with this.
Amusingly, meat was what helped humans start developing larger brains.

They can claim it all they like, but our eyes are on the front of our head. Prey animals wear them on the side of the head in order to detect danger. Predators wear their eyes on the front in order to better detect prey attempting to avoid them.
And really this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a huge variety of other bits of evidence like the fact that humans release endorphins when hunting, precisely like other predators, or the simple back that an herbivore wouldn't need to be anywhere near as intelligent as humans are. Only a combination hunter/scavenger has need of anything even approaching human levels of intelligence.
The mountain of evidence which weighs against humans being natural herbivores far outweighs anything they could even pretend to conjure up. Not only is it not the case, but it would be damn near impossible for anything even approaching a modern human to survive on scavenging without meat and remain healthy. The caloric cost of foraging far outweighs the caloric intake in the vast majority of circumstances.
tl;dr Peta is stupid.

What the FUCK is this godly-looking edible?

Don't forget, what animal we consider the most similar to us, primates, eat almost exclusively a vegan diet with about 5% on insects or such. If humans are omnivores, then the anatomical evidence suggests that we're the same kind... the kind that eats almost exclusively plant foods. So yeah, there are certainly differencials that can be applied to the argument to suggest that biologically, we are naturally herbivores.
Saying we're omnivores because we're capable of eating meat is just silly. We're capable of eating cardboard, too. And by the "capable" argument, then cats are omnivores because they go outside and eat grass, looking like idiots because they don't naturally eat it. No one would make the argument that cats are omnivores based on what they're capable of eating. But oh look, they sure make that argument for humans quite enthusiastically. So does that make a cat a 'true' carnivore or is the whole argument on both sides just as terrible to make?

Not really. I know a girl who hates chocolate.

You've never heard of it? Hoo boy have you been missing out. There's tons of different flavors for it (peppermint, heath bar, toffee, etc) but they all fall under the name "bark."

Cats and dogs eat grass in order to moderate their digestive system. They are incapable of properly digesting it and deriving nutrients from it.
Anyways:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonobo#Diet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_chimpanzee#Diet_and_foraging
Two of our closest relatives. Both take great pleasure in eating other mammals. Chimpanzees even have advanced group hunting tactics to back it up. These guys diverged from us four to six million years ago. Humans have only existed for two hundred thousand years. There has been a great number of iterations of primate since then.
Chimps and Bonobos also exist only in areas where fruit can be the overwhelming majority of their diet. All the same, they still fish for termites and hunt, even when they literally live in trees filled with food because they find it entertaining.
Furthermore, while on paper we share much of our DNA with Chimps, it should be noted that we do not share all our DNA. The percentage of similarity between us and any other creature is greatly limited by the fact that much of our DNA is trash. Totally unused garbage. We literally have 50% genetic material in common with a banana. The four percent difference between us and chimps (not .2 percent, that compares DNA using the incorrect method and ignores duplication) is quite significant.

I imagine bark was like Activia in those times

Well, bark does smell pretty nice...
