Hi,
Ive been cursed with this computer for a number of years now and it is a poor performer and im decided to upgrade it. The thing is i have no knowledge about computer parts. Ive read the rules of this section but im still unsure so please tell me if i shouldnt be posting here.
Here are my current specs:
Processor
Intel Pentium 4CPU 3.GHZ (CPUs)
Memory
1022MB RAM
DirectX version: 9
Graphics Card
Radeon x300 SE
Now, dont worry this thread isnt just a list of my specs, ive done research and i searched around the web and so far ive found a Graphics card, 4GB of RAM, a PSU and a new Processor.
NVIDIA EVGA GTX460

AMD Athlon II 3.0 GHZ 2MB Processor

PSU

4GB RAM Card

My main concern is will my PCU be able to power all these, will 500 Watts be enough?
Im also worried there is a chance putting these in my computer could fry the system or something.
So can you please guide me through this?
I take it your from the UK looking at PC world n all.
Take a peek on scan.co.uk for prices before you decide to purchase anything.
PC world are cunts.
don't use amazon or pcworld, use scan or ebuyer
The CPU and RAM won't be compatible with your current mobo
the 460 will be bottlenecked by a pentium 4 and we don't even know if you have a PCI-E slot
you can do much better than that PSU for the same price

Can you make anything out from that?
Also my current card uses PCI Express i believe.
Yes, X300 is PCI-E, I upgraded from one a couple months ago.
Horrible card.
5770?

5770?
Is that a card type?
Yes, from AMD.

seems to be a BTX mobo which means if you want to upgrade the CPU you're going to need a new case, mobo and ram as well as the new CPU
upgrading the graphics card with the current CPU is pointless, you'll just get horribly bottlenecked
you're pretty much just looking at a whole new build
If I were you I would just build a new computer. Not much upgrade wise you could do with your current stuff. If it is a manufacturer case then it is most likely tiny and impossible to take stuff out without breaking a lot off little OH SHIT YOU TAMPERED stuff.
Alright so let me get this straight, il also have to get a new CPU otherwise the Graphics card wont perform to its best. But at the same time i may need to get a new case?
Should i take pictures of my computer case?
the mobo is BTX which means the case has BTX mounting
any motherboard worth replacing it with will be ATX or mATX which use completely different mounting holes
basically if you want a new CPU you need a new motherboard, for a new motherboard you need a new case and because any new motherboard will use DDR3 RAM you'll need new RAM too
Well the ram is sorted out anyway, its just the CP, the case and the motherboard.
Got any recommendations?
well what's your budget
Im trying to keep it below £300, maybe as high as £350. Any higher and il have to wait until another time.
Im open to suggestions
Im searching over Scan.co.uk, can anyone tell who would be better, AMD or INTEL when it comes to motherboards?
try this http://www.scan.co.uk/savedbasket/4ef56cbf0f354039bce8e35ec26117ff
you can try to cut costs down a bit by reusing your current optical drive and hard drive
but you still need an OS, you could try installing XP using the key on your current system then using the windows 7 student offer to get the upgrade version http://www.software4students.co.uk/Microsoft_Windows_7_Professional_64_bit_Upgrade_Edition-details.aspx
Scrap, and redo. Current rig is not worth upgrading.

Thanks for making the list but ive decided to go with this gaming computer they are selling:
http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=1122
The custom options ive chosen are:
1Gb EVGA GTX 460 SSC, 850Mhz GPU 336 Cores
600W Corsair CMPSU-600CX
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
If i do get this computer, il have to buy something to put my important files on and transfer them over.
Build it yourself, it's way cheaper.

you can do much better than that for £600

£603.56 with delivery, make sure you remove scansure
SLi/Crossfire compatible for a cheaper future upgrade, AM3+ motherboard so you can upgrade to an AM3+ bulldozer CPU in the future
better CPU, GPU, case, power supply, motherboard, pretty much everything is improved over that prebuilt while still being slightly cheaper
if you want 1TB swap the HDD to the 1TB spinpoint F3 for £10 more

Hold on wait, when you buy the case is it built fully and you just have to slot the motherboard in and the various parts(Graphics card, PSU)?
pretty much
if you can use a screwdriver and plug in cables, you can build a PC

Hold on, this HD 6870, is it better than a GTX 460?
yes, the 1GB 460 (not the SE) performs very similarly to the 6850
[editline]27th July 2011[/editline]
just spend some time reading build guides and watching build videos to get the general idea of what you're doing
yes, the 1GB 460 (not the SE) performs very similarly to the 6850
Sorry for bugging you again but what would you say id be better off with, the HD 6870 or the EVGA 1GB GTX 460 (The card i was going to buy first anyway)
Im just wondering because you put it on the list so that must mean its comparable to it, but i just wanted to know what is better for playing game.
the cheapest evga 460 on scan is £138
the cheapest 6870 is £135, has a better cooler and is a more powerful card

Thank you so much for all your help, i cant wait till i get enough money to get rid of this stupid computer.
Are all the components on that list what i need?, you said something about reusing my hold hard drive ealier.
yes that's everything
I was suggesting reusing the hard drive and optical drive from your old PC to cut costs a bit but that's not necessary with the newer build
Alright as i said thank you for all the help, but scan.co.uk wont let me access the list you made anymore.
It still works for me
