• Russia's greatest enemy is ISIS, not US
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday that the Islamic State group was Moscow's greatest enemy, notwithstanding the strained relations with the United States over the Ukraine conflict. "I believe ISIS is our greatest enemy right now," Lavrov said in an interview with Russian radio stations when asked whether he considers China, ISIS or NATO Russia's greatest threat. Lavrov said "hundreds of Russian citizens, hundreds of Europeans, hundreds of Americans are fighting for ISIS, along with CIS (former Soviet) countries." "They are already returning home. They come here to rest after fighting and can get up to dirty tricks at home," he said. "As far as (relations with the) United States are concerned, these are state issues, these are issues of the world order, which have to be resolved through talks."
Source
Russia has a pretty decent army. They're gonna fuck up ISIS real good.
Russia has a pretty decent army. They're gonna fuck up ISIS real good.
they'll get lost on the way there and end up annexing the rest of Ukraine
Russia has a pretty decent army. They're gonna fuck up ISIS real good.
Yeah, like in Beslan. It's just gonna be great
Yeah, like in Beslan. It's just gonna be great
You can't judge them over Beslan. Beslan was an incredibly difficult situation and there is literally no way any special forces in the world would be able to successfully defuse the situation. Some would perform better than the Russian forces did, definitely, but the situation was still fucked [editline]22nd April 2015[/editline] I don't doubt their apparent use of tanks and thermobaric weapons were retarded though [editline]22nd April 2015[/editline] Didn't help there were pissed off civies nearby armed with rifles that made shit even worse and most likely sparked the whole fuck up of explosions and the storming of the school
along with CIS (former Soviet) countries
Fucking cis scum.
Fucking cis scum.
I actually said "die cis scum" before the Tumblrites used that word when I would be playing geopol. games like Shadow President and Superpowers 2 trying to fuck up random post-soviet countries as Italy(or the soviet union itself, if it was shadow president). But back to topic, this is awesome, maybe the space stuff and fighting ISIS might help Putin and Obama/Whoever is going to be president next in being less hostile to each others. I am going to be cautiously optimistic about this statement.
they'll get lost on the way there and end up annexing the rest of Ukraine
Turns out the new ISIS headquarters are located in Ukraine :v:
russia is effective in military confrontations because they dont seem too restrained by morals terrorists in a city? blow it all to pieces that is of course not really a good thing but... does this mean russia is intending on confronting ISIS? the article doesnt make it any clearer
that is of course not really a good thing but... does this mean russia is intending on confronting ISIS? the article doesnt make it any clearer
No it doesn't. All the article has is the foreign minister saying that HE considers ISIS to be Russia's greatest threat.
But I thought that ISIS had already defeated the Russians? [thumb] http://i.imgur.com/2OJmZah.png [/thumb]
Russia has a pretty decent army. They're gonna fuck up ISIS real good.
Pretty decent army? It's pretty pretty alright.

lol I think defeating ISIS will affect the US more than we know, has anyone seen Lord Of War?
This is really great news because if there were every a country Assad would let enter to help fight his enemies, it would be Russia. If that happened, we would see the end of the Free Syrian Army but majority of Daesh would be destroyed. What the cost-benefit of that is, I'm unsure.

Russia and US relations are strained but they're FAR from being enemies.
I've heard that the FSA is nothing like it used to be though, mainly overtaken by radical groups
A lot of fighters have joined extremist groups simply because they're winning more than they are. But the biggest reason the FSA is doing down the shitter is because they're physically stuck between Assad's forces and Daesh/extremist forces. Saw a documentary about a FSA group launching an attack on Daesh to liberate a small village near them. They were completely successful in the attack, but at the end of the documentary it stated that the village was bombed to hell by Assad days after the FSA took it.
Still thinking that if they hadn't stalled every attempt to de-escalate the Syrian civil war in the UN and later by the US, then maybe this wouldn't have been such a problem... They encouraged Assad to continue his rampage that brought on this conflict and birthed these groups
It's so fucking awesome to see the entire civilized world uniting against the pure evil that is ISIS.
It's like western powers have been trying stir up shit in the middle east and causing even more radical and extreme groups to come out of the ashes of previous groups to create a group of concentrated evil that the whole world can unite against
It's a stretch to call the US an enemy to Russia nowadays anyways, despite the strained relations.

It's not like Russian army consists of psychopaths. Morals are a thing in Russia, army included.
Russia has a pretty decent army. They're gonna fuck up ISIS real good.
It would just be Afghanistan all over again. It doesn't matter how 'decent' your army is - it has been shown time and again that conventional armies - regardless of quality - don't fare well against unconventional forces (especially in their home territory). A lot of it comes down to using the correct strategy and policies - but these tend to be more pacifist than aggressive (e.g. the "hearts and minds" approach) which may not appeal to some people/countries.
Morals are a thing in Russia, army included.
Morale on the other hand...
IS is problem for Russia because 10% of Russia is already muslim (so around 13-15 millions)

The US fought an unconventional war very well. The problem came from the Iraqi government itself.

Soviet-Afghan War 2 oh boy
What the hell is going on in this thread? Why is anyone talking about Russia "fighting ISIS" or anything like that? Russia's foreign minister made yet another token and bullshit remark that should have been obvious to everyone already. And people are posting about Russia's army doing something lol what the fuck.
