• Apple is redesigning OSX, unveiling next month
For the past few years, Apple's desktop software has played second fiddle to iOS at its annual developer conference WWDC. According to 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman, who is seen as a reputable source for Apple news, that won't be the case next month. It's long been speculated that OS X 10.10 will see a big refresh this year. Gurman states that this "end-to-end redesign" will be Apple's most comprehensive since launching OS X over a decade ago. Although the new look will reportedly take design cues from last year's radical rethink of iOS, these aesthetic changes will not change the fundamentals of OS X. Codenamed "Syrah," OS X 10.10 will reportedly have sharper corners, more white space, and iOS 7-esque toggles. Apple will also apparently continue its trend of bringing certain features from iOS into its desktop OS. Apple has repeatedly reassured its users that its two operating systems will remain distinct, despite the past few years seeing the addition of an iOS-like Launchpad, Mac App Store, and applications that began on mobile like Maps. As for what's in store for iOS 8, Gurman builds on his previous rumors, saying that new apps like Healthbook, TextEdit, and Preview are on the way, along with changes to Siri and iCloud. He notes that "some of the notable features in the works" could potentially be pushed back to a later release, as a number of employees that usually work on iOS have been moved over to work on getting OS X ready for its WWDC unveil. The rumor is similar to those spread last year that Apple's OS X team was being tapped to work on iOS 7.
http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/2/5674258/apples-wwdc-plans-rumor
Please no monopoly UI
Good. Now that iOS has a cleaner design, every time I look at a screen running OSX, it just looks out of place and a bit outdated.

The only aspect of the mavericks update I've noticed is that the power button no longer "sleeps" the computer. Annoying as fuck.
I hope they don't pull a microsoft and try and make something 'fancy' along the lines of metro. [t]http://i.imgur.com/czNIsWb.jpg[/t] I don't even use it, it's just a place I occasionally end up when I press the windows key. Mind you on the other hand I don't use the actual desktop either, so maybe I'm not the best person to say that. [t]http://i.imgur.com/YXukui0.jpg[/t]

Not that I'll use it, but I hope it's not as ugly as the new IOS.
Calling it now, flat colors and more app store integration.
I usually like the UI of OSX but I do hope they'll make it a bit more snappy and clean.
You'd think they'd make an OSXI at this point.
Probably will be iOSX.
You'd think they'd make an OSXI at this point.
The x is just part of the name, not the number. It's meant to be an homage to Unix.
The x is just part of the name, not the number. It's meant to be an homage to Unix.
It is the number, OS X is called that because it's the successor to Mac OS 9.
The x is just part of the name, not the number. It's meant to be an homage to Unix.
Nope, it's X as in roman numerals. Mac OS 8 > Mac OS 9 > Mac OS X.

Do you boot into Powershell?

[t]http://i.imgur.com/YXukui0.jpg[/t]
Metro/Win8 Desktop shell has always felt like a huge step back from W7's Aero Glass. I mean it's not a major issue or anything, but I do enjoy some frosty wallpaper showing through my window borders instead of what's essentially a more sleek Win95 shell
Nope, it's X as in roman numerals. Mac OS 8 > Mac OS 9 > Mac OS X.
It used to be, but it's changed over the years (Mac OS 10 10?). Same way it used to be called "System" (i.e. System 7), then Mac OS, Mac OS X, OS X, etc. These days I'd say the X just refers to the "new" base system.
Leaked prototype of the new UI:
Is that an early build of xorg?

I for one actually like iOS 7, so most liky they will make it look like that.
You don't use Metro or the Desktop... Do you boot into Powershell?
No, I boot into desktop and make use of various hotkey commands (Win+Q/W/E), the taskbar/superbar and by rightclicking the start button. It's extremely simple, streamlined and efficient.
If they do just ONE thing, it better be to give users the ability to disable that fucking fullscreen animation. It's literally the most useless and annoying "feature" ever added to an operating system.
They need to fix mouse scrolling having forced acceleration, some mice with physical wheels just don't work right
i like how mavericks looks but i'm interested to see what apple do with it [editline]7th May 2014[/editline]
Good. Now that iOS has a cleaner design, every time I look at a screen running OSX, it just looks out of place and a bit outdated.
why's that? mavericks looks pretty clean. circa-2009 OS X looks out of place with all of the weird positioning/animation and oversized icons but those days are mostly gone i mean, i haven't heard any complaints about stock mavericks. it looks quite modern these days, less overdone gradients and weird stitching/leather stuff my setup is pretty much stock and i like it

[t]http://i.imgur.com/YXukui0.jpg[/t]
Why not put some apps on that start screen Why not set it to show the app list by default Why not install classic shell
By the way, everyone can get in on the beta now, it's not just limited to people in the OSX developer program https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram I'm not sure if they'll release 10.10 to beta users early, but I wouldn't be surprised. I had Mavericks and iOS 7 for months before it was officially released
