Link to article page - because I don't yet know how to quote articles like they do in ITN: Here. The writer makes a good point. The potential for disaster was - is - very high. [editline]5:32[/editline] Before you rate me disagrees and dumbs, read the goddamn article. It talks about what could potentially happen if such massive earthquakes happen off the coast of the USA.
Wow, that is just plain stupid. I would have imagined that reactors should be required to withstand heavy earthquakes, especially after chernobyl :geno:
I smell bullshit. An earthquake that has the sheer force to rip through all the protective layers of casing that encase the nuclear core would also cause incredible damage to California anyway. We are talking about -complete destruction- of those heavily protected, concrete covered, casings, think what that quake would do to a house.
But it was very new when it exploded. California’s four coastal reactors have been operating since the 1970s and 1980s. Their accumulated internal radioactive burdens could exceed what was spewed at Chernobyl.
OP doesn't know that much about nuclear power. Oh wait, that's me.
Bit of a precarious locale for nuclear reactors, especially ones that aren't quakeproof. Also, prior to reading, I thought that a nuclear meltdown in Japan would've blown radioactive material into the Gulf Stream and from there it'd irradiate the States... That still possible if a Japanese reactor melts down?
Also, prior to reading, I thought that a nuclear meltdown in Japan would've blown radioactive material into the Gulf Stream and from there it'd irradiate the States... That still possible if a Japanese reactor melts down?
The gulf stream is in the Atlantic. Japan sits on the pacific.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R, now available in Japan! Get a free gasmask and DEATH with every purchase!
Is it just me or are all these video game radiation puns make me think more of Fallout and less of STALKER?

I have close and good friends in Japan you dumb fucks. (User was banned for this post ("Flaming." - Seiteki))
People are a lot more fearful of nuclear power than they need to be. Also, we had an 8.8 earthquake in California in 1989 and it didn't do shit to the reactors.

Why did you put interesting article in front of the thread title? Now I just think you are a retard
An asteroid could also fall from space and wipe humanity off the Earth. Thank God it hasn't happened yet! :downs:
Wow, that is just plain stupid. I would have imagined that reactors should be required to withstand heavy earthquakes, especially after chernobyl :geno:
Chernobyl wasn't caused by an earthquake, though...

This is the most unscientific thing i've ever read
It sickens me to see assholes like you make fun of the situation. I have close and good friends in Japan you dumb fucks.
I think you're overreacting. It's just a silly joke regarding games. No need to go all batshit CRAZY at me for trying to cheer up people here.
The reactor was hit by an 8.8 quake and didn't melt down. It sustained damage, yes, but there was no melt down and it isn't spewing radioactive material. If there was ever a trial by fire for modern nuclear reactor safety mechanisms, THIS WAS IT. No meltdown. No explosion. Just a malfunction of the cooling systems which can be countered until the problem is resolved. Again, 8.8 super quake. No explosion. What is it going to take to stop the fear mongering nuclear energy bullshit? Nuclear energy is SAFE.
This is why we need fusion. Any earthquake qould disrupt the fusion reactor and just cause it to shutdown. Afaik Fission reactors are like, shoot a neutron into a radioactive mass and hope you can keep it cold until it fissions fully.
but there was no melt down and it isn't spewing radioactive material.
There's a small possibility of a leak still. actually it's already happened. they've lost control
Power company TEPCO says it has lost the ability to control reactor pressure at Fukushima No. 1 and No.2 reactors. A spokesman said pressure is stable inside the reactors but is rising in the containment vessels. He said it is not known if there will be a need to release pressure at the plant at this point. That would involve a release of radiation. by Reuters_Helen Cook at 11:04 PM
From what I've heard most nuclear reactors are built so tough because they have to that they could withstand a direct blast from a nuclear warhead. [editline]11th March 2011[/editline]
This is why we need fusion. Any earthquake qould disrupt the fusion reactor and just cause it to shutdown. Afaik Fission reactors are like, shoot a neutron into a radioactive mass and hope you can keep it cold until it fissions fully.
Yes that's a great idea. Instead of an earthquake damaging the reactor a little bit but not enough to disrupt anything and it keeps producing power, let's design a reactor that shuts down in the event of an earthquake because who needs electricity during a crisis right?

Murphy better be wrong on this one.
Wow, that is just plain stupid. I would have imagined that reactors should be required to withstand heavy earthquakes, especially after chernobyl :geno:
You know that Chernobyl 'accident' was not because of an earthquake? It was the dumbfucks behind it(Soviet Union)
http://www.sce.com/PowerandEnvironment/PowerGeneration/SanOnofreNuclearGeneratingStation/publicsafety.htm One of the two costal reactors mentioned in the article, also the one I live 26 miles from.
Seismic Safety California is known for earthquakes. That is why geology, seismology and earthquake engineering were all applied to the careful evaluation of site selection and construction plans. SONGS is located in an area which has not experienced significant seismic activities in more than 120,000 years. Regardless, it was built to withstand a major earthquake of 7.0 magnitude on the Richter scale, whose epicenter would be within five miles of the plant.
Sure it's from the site of the majority owner, but they're not going to completely lie about it or anything.
I really do wonder why us retarded humans build on fault lines when we know they're there -- don't try to deny it, even back then if we didn't know what they were, we knew what they fucking did.

Don't tell me you think we should all be living in fallout shelters just because it's the safest.
Did anyone get killed in the explosions?
4 workers lost their lives. and to all the fear mongerers, this will not become something to be compared to Chernobyl.
