For the past 2 months my PC has been freezing when downloading or using the internet. I fixed this today by simply using an ethernet cable rather than my wifi card. This stopped the internet related freezing.
However, I finished download L4D, run the game, play for about 10 minutes and the PC freezes, again. No BSOD, no error message, no abnormal temperatures, no beeps, no sounds. Just plain frozen.
I've had the CPU RMA'd 2 months ago because I know it has stuck temp. sensors, it still does but it passed a 54 hour Prime95 test and was sent back as-is. My RAM died, so I had that RMA'd and new RAM given to me.
My GPU has acceptable temps. My CPU doesn't go over 45-50.
I am tired and near to giving up and selling off the components. Can someone please suggest something for me to do. I'm planning to run MemTest later just incase.
Try getting a linux livecd and running some form of benchmark. If it freezes then we know it's not windows causing the problem. If it runs without freezing then there is probably a driver problem or a windows problem and the solution may be to reinstall windows and make sure you the latest drivers.
It's a fresh install, other than the steam/firefox installs. Latest nvidia drivers. I'll run Prime95 after running MemTest.
Passed MemTest four times, RAM is fine.
Maybe your having a Microsoft Visual Runtime error.Im only suggesting it because the same thing was happening to me.Exactly the same.I only once saw the error and it involved C++ runtime.
It may not be it but it could be the culprit. For my fix I installed Win 7 from Vista.
Could be. I'll try formatting back to Vista, but I won't be holding my breath.
EDIT: -Snip- i read it wrong.
I had the same problem when running cpu-z and amd overdrive, are you running some sort of diagnostic software running? I also have windows 7, but its 32bit pro.
No, the only thing running when I launched L4D to test was Steam and Avast! I then disabled Avast! the second time and it still froze.
Probably the same as I have. I got the E8400 on one of the nvidia 7xxi series of their motherboards (asus p5n-d). A few of them can freeze when running an nvidia graphics card, on vista and XP you'll see screen tearing if you're unlucky when watching a movie until the computer freezes, 7 just freezes. Sound wrong, but is very right.
Not saying this is the problem in your case ijyt.
Oh, info: I overclocked my CPU and it stopped doing this. No idea why, it's down to the electrons and software on the motherboard in my case. That's why I want to get rid of P5N-D and my E8400, but the speeds are fine so it could last another year at least, if it didn't do this. Now it doesn't anymore, so it might just last.
Sounds like a whore of a problem to fix then.

Are there any browser based benchmarks for Linux?
I have a liveCD, but I do not want to copy over the existing files on my HDD.
