[release] ANYONE WHO HAS seen the movie "Friday Night Lights" knows that high school football is big in Texas. But one town in the Lone Star State has taken things to a much higher level. Allen (Texas) High School is building a new stadium that costs - hold on to your chin strap - $59.6 million. The facility, set to open in 2012, will seat 18,000. It will have artificial turf, two decks, four concession areas, 12 restrooms and - of course - a video scoreboard. Wasteful spending? Maybe. But don't accuse the city of Allen, which has a population slightly higher than 77,000, of being overly focused on football. Almost half of the $120 million bond package passed in May of 2009 will be used to build an ultramodern auditorium for performing arts. "The community supports our kids in everything: football, baseball, basketball, band," Allen High coach Tom Westerberg told highschool.rivals.com. "It isn't just athletics. They really support us with everything we do." If you're skeptical about the need for the new stadium, know this: Last year, the Allen Eagles - you've gotta love that - played a game at the new Texas Stadium that drew over 50,000 fans. Allen's current stadium has only 7,000 permanent seats. The school sets up an additional 7,000 temporary seat for each game. So, to paraphrase another popular movie, town officials have no doubt that if they build it, fans will come. [/release] That's a little excessive, don't you think?
Everything's bigger in Texas
That's a little excessive, don't you think?
What part of "Everything's bigger in Texas" do you not understand? Fucking goddamn ninjas up in here.
Not really surprising to me. At the school I used to go to, the administration was quite willing to tear down the perfectly good football stadium we had and spend a good two years and a couple million dollars building another one, while they tore down one of the two campuses they built to relieve the overpopulation problem and moved everybody to the smaller one while the other one was being built.
Can't say I'm surprised.
Everything's bigger in Texas
besides intelligence :smug:
That's my Texas :downs: [editline]05:12AM[/editline]
besides intelligence :smug:
:saddowns:
I go to this school. 90% of the teachers suck ass.
I go to this school. 90% of the teachers suck ass.
So instead of making the school world-class with $60m, they're building a big stadium? Typical Texas.
So instead of making the school world-class with $60m, they're building a big stadium? Typical Texas.
Pretty much. My high school is brand new this year and they haven't made any dumb ass mistakes yet..
With what they're doing to their public schools, the only thing Texan kids will be good at is running around a field with a ball. They might as well dump all their money into it.
My school spent like 6 million on their sports complex. It has a decent football stadium, 2 baseball fields, and a nautitorium. The school just added a huge wing onto the existing school for the influx of freshmen students. ^ Texas school.
Texas education funding is in a lot of trouble, I'm surprised any district was able to put up that much cash. Especially Allen, Texas. For those of you who don't know, it's half suburb and half rural, and on both counts not nearly wealthy enough to afford something like that. This one even seems to be bigger than Kimbrough and Southlake-Carrol's Dragon Stadium, which were already fairly large for high schools. We just love our high school football. High school football is a really really big deal in Texas.
Fuck man, Texas is building a $60 million dollar stadium where my NJ school can barely afford to maintain freshmen sports?
I'm curious as to see money spent on education in Texas compared to this.
High school football is a really really big deal in Texas.
well yeah, anything kind of activity that requires brute force and low levels of intelligence are abundant in texas
Yeah sports and arts are nice and all, but what about things that are productive, that it's actually possible to get a job doing? Where's the $60Mil for a state of the art Biotech lab, or other science equipment and tools, where's the money for new books, for more supplies and learning aids, where's the $60 million for better and more teachers? These are the important things.

60 million for a fucking high school stadium? My high school doesn't even have a fucking football team.
Allen's a stupid town anyways [editline]12:46AM[/editline] It's shit compared to Frisco and Plano
imagine how many high quality texan history text books could be purchased with that money!
My initial reaction was that it's a bit extreme, but I changed my mind after reading the article. There will always be spectacles that will draw a large crowd, whether it's performing arts, professional football,high-school football, or whatever. If there's a large crowd, you need to accommodate them or things will be chaotic. This seems like a necessity.
It might seem a bit stupid but think about it. Lets say they sell out in every game they have and lets just say the tickets are $6. That's $108,000 right there for ONE game and that's without food and beverages etc.
Yeah, they should spend money on EDUCATION not sports, that pissed me off back when I was in highschool, they'd spend hundreds of thousands/millions on sports but then in media/programming, we had PCs on single-core processors. Was fucking ridiculous.
Everyone knows sports are the most important thing in life ever.
Are we done with the "Texans are idiots" jokes yet?
Are we done with the "Texans are idiots" jokes yet?
You mad?
No, I'm a pretty big fan of Texas voluntarily seceding from the Union. At this point, though, it's kind of like beating up a disabled kid. Waaaaay to easy a target, not to mention overdone beyond belief.
