TBH I prefer when classes either do not exist at all, or the classes themselves can be extremely heavily customized by the user. Generally I prefer things like TES, Gothic, Path of Exile, etc are some examples off the top of my head. Multi-classing is a nice compromise if you *have* to have classes though, and grim dawn was pretty fun when I tried it (going to have to go back now that it's out of early access)
Dark Souls and TeS has it right. It's asinine to be stuck being one thing the entire time.
I don't like classes because they force you into one play style, but recent RPGs that let you be a juggernaut at everything eliminate any challenge in building your character. Skyrim and Fallout 4 come to mind. Level caps should come back.
Funny that they bring up Grim Dawn, since currently that's been my go-to game. And while it does restrict you in terms of making you choose your classes, the fact it allows you to pick two to make a hybrid of different styles is pretty fucking sweet. For instance, as a Demolitionist I have a lot of bomb-oriented skills, throwing around elements like fire and electricity and generally blowing shit up. But because I chose Occultist as my second class, I can break open a bottle of Witchfire and pour it all over my weapon to unleash gnarly Chaos damage, throw the caustic eyeballs of a tortured witch-god to melt my enemies with acidic goop, and of course I have a Raven and Hellhound to do my bidding and keep eldritch horrors off of my arse. SO GOOD. Also, speaking of Grim Dawn, they just released the Crucible DLC which is basically "fight monsters in an arena and get rewards". Though for the asking price (about £4 at the moment), I definitely think I'll be picking this thing up tomorrow. I mean, I'm still having a ton of fun with the game, and there's a few things left for me to clean up before I ascend to Elite, so if they're offering me something extra for the price of a good drink (my local is pretty reasonably priced for being so close to London), I'll take the bait. So yeah Elspin, now's a pretty good time to dive back in. And considering the main game's currently discounted, it's a good time for others to dive into Cairn and wreck the shit of the gods. Which is kinda appropriate, since apparently the game was made on a similar engine to the one used in Titan Quest.
