I still don't fully understand the meaning of the word pylon :v:
Ah, I wanted the picture under 'Ingenious structure' to win. It's still a very nice design that won though.

dont buff my pylon
Bitches don't know.
i thought there was a plan to take pylons down a while ago, since they caused cancer. then again what doesn't cause cancer these days BOXES CAUSE CANCER
Why don't just they place the cables underground You know, so whole towns won't lose electricity after a stronger breeze or if a tree falls on a smaller pylon
I was confused for a second on why a SC2 update would be posted by BBC.
Why don't just they place the cables underground You know, so whole towns won't lose electricity after a stronger breeze or if a tree falls on a smaller pylon
This is possible. however next to the heavy cost to put this enormous network of cables underground there is the issue of maintaining these cables. Overground they can easily be repaired/maintained. [editline]14th October 2011[/editline] also these design look really nice. I'd love to have them instead of these ugly looking metal trees
Why don't just they place the cables underground You know, so whole towns won't lose electricity after a stronger breeze or if a tree falls on a smaller pylon
Because underground power lines are twenty times as expensive per length

You must construct additiona.. No.
You must construct additiona.. No.
Except they do if they wanna keep their network redundant, and capable of handling the higher power demands of the future.
Except they do if they wanna keep their network redundant, and capable of handling the higher power demands of the future.
But if in theory we're going to start using wind and solar power, which can both be pretty localised, what's even the point in designing new ones?
But if in theory we're going to start using wind and solar power, which can both be pretty localised, what's even the point in designing new ones?
Localized solutions are not redundant. And wind and solar is also not a stable power source, nor are they efficient enough (yet).
Localized solutions are not redundant. And wind and solar is also not a stable power source, nor are they efficient enough (yet).
Nuclear power is a much more likely power source; I was simply playing devil's advocate :V. Nuclear power has a stigma from Chernobyl etc., however, it's actually pretty safe on the whole...
don't buff my pylon was put in the console to remove the watermark in the gmod 9 days :D
These things are fucking hideous and I'd be glad to see them go.
Hideous but effective for their time.
Why didn't they choose this design? Its far cooler
I thought this was about Starcraft.
Why didn't they choose this design? Its far cooler
Probably more expensive to build, I think they were aiming for something that looks nice, and is cheap.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15293922 In fact of all the designs on this page they chose the ugliest I guess simplicity and cost overshadows looks these days
These are also called pylons for some reason:
No they're called traffic cones.

We can't just stop using something because it can fuck up really bad if you aren't careful, it means that you need to just be more careful.

If you don't maintain a 40 year old power plant, chances are, when it's stressed, it'll fuck up.
