MAD MEN is a character-driven period drama created by Matthew Weiner (also known for his work as an executive producer and writer for The Sopranos). Set in the 1960's golden age of advertising, season one starts off at the beginning of the decade, with Donald Draper (Jon Hamm) as the creative director for Sterling Cooper, an ad agency in Madison Avenue, Manhattan. While the series is definitively Don's story, it also focuses on the soft-spoken secretary Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), the forward-thinking account exec Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), the beautiful-and-blond housewife Betty Draper (January Jones), Sterling Cooper's alluringly sassy office manager Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks), and one of the senior, but young-living, partners of the agency Roger Sterling (John Slattery). Since its series premier in 2007, the show has been critically acclaimed for its production value; its accurate portrayal in what it was like in the advertising world, living in the 1960's in comparison to today, its multidimensional characters and storytelling, and its use of 'subtext'. The show is currently heading towards its sixth season, which Weiner confirms to be the second-to-last (source contains spoilers).

"I'm interested in this show. What do I need to know before getting into it?" The show contains generally 44 minutes of mature (and, at times, insightful or humorous) dialogue and situations (like adultery, drinking, smoking, profanity, sexism, etc); although they're not without reason, so know what to look out for if it easily gets uncomfortable around family/friends. While you're watching, it's important to pay close attention to what's going on and what's being said. Though you'll be able to understand the premise of the plot, you might also catch a small detail that alludes to something that has been said or done in another episode. If anything else, I'd just try to watch at your own pace, and see if you're interested enough in becoming invested. If it starts off slow for you, I'd recommend giving it at least until after the third episode. The first four seasons are available for instant streaming on Netflix, with the fifth season arriving on the 25th.

[thumb]http://blogs.amctv.com/mad_men_season_2_publicity_photos/main_cast.jpg[/thumb] [SUP][SUB](from left-to-right: Aaron Staton as Ken Cosgrove Rich Sommer as Harry Crane Robert Morse as Bert Cooper Michael Gladis as Paul Kinsey Bryan Batt as Salvatore Romano Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway John Slattery as Roger Sterling Vincent Kartheiser as Pete Campbell Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson Jon Hamm as Donald Draper January Jones as Betty Draper) [/SUB][/SUP]

Promotional posters from prior seasons:

[thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mm11.png[/thumb] [thumb] http://filesmelt.com/dl/mm21.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mm31.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mm41.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/mm5.png[/thumb]

Links: (these are always up-to-date so expect spoilers) - Official Site - Season 6 Cast Photos - Wikipedia - Mad Men Wiki - Facebook - Subreddit [sp]Please do further identify spoilers![/sp]
Season one spoiler about Don [sp]sp[/sp]
Is there anything I should add or change? Man I am loving that 2 hour season premiere poster.
Just started watching this, on Season 2, would like to say that Betty is an ungrateful annoying wench, bitch please. [editline]wat[/editline] ey whoever plays sally is by far one of the worst actresses I've ever had the displeasure of viewing [sp]that horrible attempt at being madsad about her grandpa's death[/sp] [editline]wat[/editline] it's also a real effort to look at kate moss' 'face' for a prolonged period of time
