While the series is definitively Don's story, it also focuses on the soft-spoken secretary Peggy Olson (​[I][URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabeth_Moss"]Elisabeth Moss[/URL][/I]), the forward-thinking account exec Pete Campbell ([URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Kartheiser"][I]Vincent Kartheiser[/I][/URL]), the beautiful-and-blond housewife Betty Draper (​[URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_Jones"][I]January Jones[/I][/URL]), Sterling Cooper's alluringly sassy office manager Joan Holloway (​[URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina_Hendricks"][I]Christina Hendricks[/I][/URL]), and one of the senior, but young-living, partners of the agency Roger Sterling (​[URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Slattery"][I]John Slattery[/I][/URL]).
Since its series premier in 2007, the show has been critically acclaimed for its production value; its accurate portrayal in what it was like in the advertising world, living in the 1960's in comparison to today, its multidimensional characters and storytelling, and its use of 'subtext'.

The show contains generally 44 minutes of mature (and, at times, insightful or humorous) dialogue and situations (like adultery, drinking, smoking, profanity, sexism, etc); although they're not without reason, so know what to look out for if it easily gets uncomfortable around family/friends.
While you're watching, it's important to pay close attention to what's going on and what's being said. Though you'll be able to understand the premise of the plot, you might also catch a small detail that alludes to something that has been said or done in another episode. If anything else, I'd just try to watch at your own pace, and see if you're interested enough in becoming invested.
If it starts off slow for you, I'd recommend giving it at least until after the third episode.
