It’s a balmy night in Manhattan’s financial district, and at a sports bar called Stout, everyone is Tindering. The tables are filled with young women and men who’ve been chasing money and deals on Wall Street all day, and now they’re out looking for hookups. Everyone is drinking, peering into their screens and swiping on the faces of strangers they may have sex with later that evening. Or not. “Ew, this guy has Dad bod,” a young woman says of a potential match, swiping left. Her friends smirk, not looking up.
http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2015/08/tinder-hook-up-culture-end-of-dating
People used to meet their partners through proximity, through family and friends, but now Internet meeting is surpassing every other form. “It’s changing so much about the way we act both romantically and sexually,” Garcia says. “It is unprecedented from an evolutionary standpoint.” As soon as people could go online they were using it as a way to find partners to date and have sex with. In the 90s it was Craigslist and AOL chat rooms, then Match.com and Kiss.com. But the lengthy, heartfelt e-mails exchanged by the main characters in You’ve Got Mail (1998) seem positively Victorian in comparison to the messages sent on the average dating app today. “I’ll get a text that says, ‘Wanna fuck?’ ” says Jennifer, 22, a senior at Indiana University Southeast, in New Albany. “They’ll tell you, ‘Come over and sit on my face,’ ” says her friend, Ashley, 19.
Chivalry is dead.
I always thought Tinder was specifically made to be a hook-up service and not for dating.
I always thought Tinder was specifically made to be a hook-up service and not for dating.
You can do that, but the large majority of people using the app is just looking to fuck
I dunno, the internet really enlarges the pool. So many people can find people who fit their needs better than ever before. For relationships or hookups.
I never had any luck with Tinder. I guess I'm just hideous.
I never had any luck with Tinder. I guess I'm just hideous.
to be fair the article is mostly talking to rich 1% 20-somethings in NYC, which already is known for tons of hookup sex
OP you left out how much this article directly pissed off tinder too https://twitter.com/Tinder
Whoever wrote the article seems to not like men who want to have intercourse.
Whoever wrote the article seems to not like men who want to have intercourse.
No, actually it's a reasonable critique of how visibly and unashamedly superficial and narcissistic our society has become-- not to mention painfully inept at conducting basic face-to-face interactions with other human beings (which used to be taken for granted), thanks to a modern overdependence on social media and technology that's bordering on addiction for a huge portion of the population. Some of the people interviewed here, goddamn what shitbirds. There's no depth, no complexity at all, to them. They're not alive; they're just directionlessly existing like animals: eating, drinking, excreting and fucking. Imagine being that purposeless.
I don't see why casual safe sex is a bad thing or shameful in any way.
I don't see why casual safe sex is a bad thing or shameful in any way.
Agreed. Casual sex is extremely superficial, it's a purely a physical thing so I don't get the hate of people being picky about... ya know... physical things.
Is this like a mad max sort of apocalypse or an adventure time one?
You can do that, but the large majority of people using the app is just looking to fuck
From my experience at least, most girls that I've talked to who use it are looking for new friends, or a long term deal. Not many people I've seen are using it just for a hookup. Probably depends on where you live though, because that's my experiences with it where I live.
Meh, I met my ex on Tinder and it was good while it lasted. I know many people who're in steady relationships which started on Tinder... it's not just for hookups. I'd say the split is about 50/50 for hookups/dating.
I never had any luck with Tinder. I guess I'm just hideous.
ya probably
I never had any luck with Tinder. I guess I'm just hideous.
You probably just look so good that you seem unapproachable.
An acquaintance of mine used tinder once, with success (found someone, and they porked) He now hates the world and would probably have a blank and bored face if ISIS was about to cut off his head.
Men expressing what they want without wasting anyone's time. What horrible creatures. Yes, men are horny and yes men want women to sit on their faces. Be glad you found that out in 1st message, not 100th when you wasted time to find that out.
Tinder is pretty meh. Something about it feels really detached. I've had luck with POF, while still being based on attraction you can at least show off your rad personality if you aren't a total babe.
Eh, this'll fix itself sooner than you think
No, actually it's a reasonable critique of how visibly and unashamedly superficial and narcissistic our society has become--
If society as a whole is superficial and narcissistic... how would pretending that it's not help any?
not to mention painfully inept at conducting basic face-to-face interactions with other human beings (which used to be taken for granted), thanks to a modern overdependence on social media and technology that's bordering on addiction for a huge portion of the population.
People with bad social skills or social anxiety previously had very little outlet for their social needs. That's changed, increasing their quality of life, which I think is a good thing. It is a reasonable worry however how the effortless of text based communication might make people complacent and cause marginalization. But really face to face communication is a norm now as well as ever before, except for people suffering from severe marginalization.
Some of the people interviewed here, goddamn what shitbirds. There's no depth, no complexity at all, to them. They're not alive; they're just directionlessly existing like animals: eating, drinking, excreting and fucking. Imagine being that purposeless.
Well I'm glad you're here to be deep, complex and purposeful for all of us :v: The people interviewed are probably not the kind that you or I'd be on the same wavelength with, but is that a problem? Just because I don't like them doesn't make them worse people. They've found a thing to do in life that they find interesting and keeps them going, and isn't that in the end what we all, even deep individuals like you strive for? People have for at least the entirety of humanity had "shallow" sexual relations, and Tinder does nothing but streamline the process. If "getting sex" stops being and achievement by becoming easy, people will stop seeking it out just for the social gratification aspect of it, and instead when it's something more meaningful to them. Isn't this something you would approve of? [sp]"They're not alive... ...like animals"? What are you even saying... I suppose you've proved your superiority to Tinder users by 'eating, drinking, excreting and not fucking'[/sp]
People have for at least the entirety of humanity had "shallow" sexual relations, and Tinder does nothing but streamline the process.
Not necessarily. Women were far more careful about sex since it could easily end with them burdened with a child that might not even have a father around, or they were being married off to manage affairs of family and property. There's also the fact plenty of sex for the majority of our old history was rape. I mean, there's a reason the guy says it's unprecedented from an evolutionary standpoint. Let's not jump down govna's throat or call him an elitist, he makes pretty good points, especially about just how essentially idle these people are.
I'd probably use Tinder if not for having a gf and being in fucking poland
I'd probably use Tinder if not for having a gf and being in fucking poland
but, polish girls. what could you need tinder for
Not necessarily. And Talishmar is right, depending on the specific area we're talking about sex really wasn't anything sacred. Although as said, it depends on the region - there was even salt between Rome and the West regarding sexuality.

Imagine trying to make life out like some movie where everyone has this grand goal in their life and is destined to achievement some major accomplishment, when its utterly impossible for that to be the case. Imagine telling people they have to live to the standards and restrictions of others, instead of just living their own life the way that can make them the happiest. I think its better to stop trying to make life something grand and unique, and instead just look at it as life. Something utterly meaningless and devoid of purpose, but in which we can at least try to enjoy the ride, have some fun, and not give so much of a fuck about being important or doing something meaningful to the point the stress gives you a heart attack in your forties.

No. People have always been thoughtless and shallow. It's just a lot of us don't notice that without being exposed to them. Before the Internet, you needed first hand exposure. Now you don't. The human race is no more shallow or pathetic than ever before in that sense.
Tinder is pretty dumb anyway. Most guys are going to have better luck meeting and dating attractive girls by talking to them IRL than desperately hoping they'll match with you on Tinder.
