I think they're onto something with this, but it doesn't work as a d-pad replacement for most genres. Should have one d-pad and one trackpad imo. No reason to have two trackpads.
EDIT: d-pad

the left trackpad isn't meant to be a stick replacement, it's meant to be a d-pad replacement. that's why there's the cross indent on it
not to mention the fact that there's an analog stick already on it

2 trackpads means more versatility anyways.
Mouse on the right. 16 button touch menu on the left.
It's a fine controller for the right games. I had a blast playing Dark Souls 3 with one.

Honestly it just looks too big for my liking. I haven't actually been able to hold one (the only place I know there are physical controllers is the Gamestop in my local mall, and those are in boxes) so I don't know what they're actually like in practice. I assume they'll be much smaller in actual practice and won't require me reaching my thumb way far away like I'm imagining in my head.

I just don't really want to drop $50 on something I can't use.

It's slightly bigger than a 360 controller.

Oh yeah nah I could use it just fine probably. Would take some getting used to and tweaking but beyond that it wouldn't be a problem.
As soon as my current controller dies I'm gonna get me one of these. Tried it out not too long ago and it was really comfortable to use.
I played through all of Torchlight 2 with mine, using a personal configuration.
With my setup, it felt as if the game was meant to be played with a controller. Never once needed to use a mouse.
I only have positive things to say about this thing.
I all nighted Killing Floor 2 with one I borrowed from a friend and didn't skip a beat. I want one fucking yesterday, but I got no money
Only hearing positive things about it so i'm prob going to get it ASAP. Sadly its 60 euro so i'm gonna wait for a while
Maybe one day they'll actually allow us to buy one...

Yeah, steams a bit shit with anyone out of the.US
My brother got me one from a Gamestop here in Sweden. He just called in and reserved one, I don't know how it is for the rest of Europe though.
I have over 200 hours played in Rocket League using this controller and it works really well in Dark Souls games too.
In RL I'm using a control scheme so customized that if someone gave me a regular Xbox/Playstation controller, I'd have to spend hours relearning the controls.

pretty much how I am with every game
throw away what they give me and completely start from scratch on what feels right to me
It has a 30% discount now, finally my time to get one

How customized my controls pretty much depend on if the game has controller support out of the box.
My Skyrim setup is pretty close to the 360 controller but with two buttons shifted to the grips and the remaining buttons are used for toggling HUD visibility and checking needs mods. I tried to set Morrowind up with a scheme similar to the Xbox version, but ended up going with a very different control scheme from even the gamepad controls in other TES games. IIRC the only controls it shares are Left Stick movement, Y to jump, B to open inventory, and Right Trigger to attack.
+ 1 today for me :D
I saw on ebgames canada the controller is now 20$ less , it's now 41$ instead of 59$ canadian :D
I'm glad about this gamepad :D
I love mine! I mostly use it for racing games, but I did play some Fallout 4 with it and while it did have a bit of a learning curve, I felt much less awful than when I play an FPS with a standard controller.

i'd much prefer if valve released an alternate version with a dpad replacing the analog stick
[editline]2nd June 2016[/editline]
honestly i hope valve iterates on the steam controllers physical design instead of exclusively updating the software/firmware side of it.

There will be a iteration on the physical design, but no feature changes.
I really wish they would've stuck with the modular idea they had.
Want to swap out the touchpads for joysticks and dpads? Go ahead!
Don't like the position of the face buttons? Swap it with the touchpad on the right.

there already have been feature changes though
you guys realize valve gave out the cad files right
and they plan to sell just the guts too
you can make your own body if you deconstruct your controller and soon will be able to construct your own controller from scratch
Is 500,000 sales good for this sort of thing?

its stupid easy to take apart with the right screwdriver
Took me a while to get used to my one.
I struggled to get used to it with Phantom Pain, as I played that for a long time with the 360 controller.
I only used the steam controller on Dark Souls 3 and it's awesome.
The ability to customise the buttons and pads to your liking is great and the 2 extra paddle buttons on the back are really handy.
