I have an old Compaq Presario laptop that randomly shuts off at random times when it's running. It's not the battery, because it happens with or without it in (plugged in both ways). It happens after random durations too. One week it might shut off after two hours, the next week it's 15 minutes, and the week after that it's back to two hours. Is there a simple way to fix this? What could be causing it?
How hot does it run? and when it shuts down can you immediately turn it on again?

I dunno how hot it runs because I don't have a real OS installed on it right now. I can turn it on when it turns off but it shuts right off again after a few seconds. It keeps doing that but progressively getting longer (I.E. Few seconds > 15 seconds > a minute > 5 minutes)
Sounds like overheating check the vents for dust and get some compressed air to clean them out.
